>> Hi I'm Michelle Thatcher, Senior Associate Editor for cnet.com and today I'm looking at the Gateway MC7803u. What a conquerer of a name but the case design is quite a departure from Gateway. You've got a nice glossy black lid finish but there's chrome and pleather detailing throughout--that gives it kind of a lux look. The interior of the laptop matches the minimalist elegance of the exterior. You've actually around the keyboard deck a nice glossy black plastic section that includes hidden light touch media controls. When you turn off the laptop these media controls disappear and you've just got a nice clean black surface. There's also a backlit keyboard that's really great for working in bed or other low light situations and it's really comfortable to type on. I'm a fan of this keyboard. The crowning feature of this laptop is its 16-inch screen and that measurement actually gives you the 16 to 9 aspect ratio that's necessary for watching HD video; and you'll notice to that it has a kind of frameless look. It's actually edge to edge plastic without a display bezel which gives you a nice smooth surface for watching your movies. My biggest beef with this laptop is that it's got this great HD-friendly display and no Blu-ray optical drive to back it up so you're going to have to get your HD content online. However, without the Blu-ray drive that helps keep the laptop's price low and this Gateway is priced less than $1,000. I'm Michelle Thatcher and this was the First Look at the Gateway MC7803u. With an HD-friendly 16-inch screen and beautiful design, the affordably priced Gateway MC7801u makes an excellent portable media center, provided your HD content is not on a Blu-ray disc.
With a sleek design, HD-friendly display, and a Blu-ray drive, the 16-inch Sony Vaio FW270 is a near-ideal portable entertainment center.
Budget computer shoppers, take note: if you're looking for an affordable way to get Blu-ray on a laptop, the Core i3-powered Gateway NV5933u is one of the best values around.
The Gateway FPD2185W's excellent image quality, adjustability, extra features, and decent price make it tough to beat.
The Gateway T-6330U's attractive case design and lengthy battery life make it a good pick for budget-minded shoppers who want a more portable midsize laptop.
The latest in Gateway's line of versatile slim towers, the SX2850-33 stays current with a fast Intel Core i3 CPU, and more importantly adds Wi-Fi to improve its suitability as a living-room desktop. It might cost more than a Nettop or a dedicated video-streaming device, but for its overall speed and flexibility, we'd pick this system as a budget PC or an online living-room content center.
We don't know how Gateway makes money selling these things, but the combination of high-end components and low price makes the 17-inch Gateway P-7811FX the best mobile gaming deal going right now.
The Gateway FX4710 provides enough performance to get you through most of today's games and multimedia software, but the ahead-of-its time memory is wasted on current applications. You can make your PC dollar go further on a desktop with a more balanced configuration.
This Gateway all-in-one has a touch screen, but that might be the least interesting thing about it. With a 23-inch display, a Blu-ray drive, and competitive performance, the ZX6900-01e offers an impressively capable system for under $1,000.
CNET's Brian Cooley takes a look at Gateway's 610 Media Center, a computer that features Windows XP Media Center 2004 and aims to merge entertainment and functionality.
