>> Hi I'm Bonnie Cha, senior editor at cnet.com and today we're taking a first look at the Garmin Nuvi 880. This is one on the company's high-end GPS models and it's probably one of the best portable navigation systems I have tested to date. First of, it's got this really nice great sleek design. It's super compact so you can take it with you on trips so, you know, transported between vehicles. In front, you got this really beautiful 4.3-inch screen and it's got a nice resolution so it's great for viewing maps and it's also got some games and you can read Audible books so it's nice if you wanna give it to your kids to read books or, you know, if you're using it outside of the car. As far as features, it's got everything you pretty much need. It's got text-to-speech functionality which means it will give you actual street names.

>> 15.1 miles, turn left on Van Ness Avenue.

>> It's got integrated Bluetooth so you can connect it with your Bluetooth cellphone and use it as a hands-free speaker system. You also get a complementary three months subscription to MSN Direct services. So that means you can search for gas stations by fuel prices, look at movie times as well as get traffic updates. But the thing that really pushes this device over the edge is its speech recognition capabilities. It understands up to 30 voice commands and it's the most accurate system I've tested to this date with that feature. Never had to repeat myself and it just understood it right away. You do have to use this extra accessory which is a bit of an eye sore in the car but I'm willing to overlook back because it's such an accurate system. The other downfall is the little pricey, the MSRP is $1,000 but I think you can find that for a couple of $100 plus with a little research on line. I'm Bonnie Cha and this has been your first look at the Garmin Nuvi 880. ^M00:01:41 [ Music ]

Garmin nüvi 880 Review

Editors' rating

The good: The Garmin Nuvi 880 crams in a number of features, including text-to-speech functionality, MSN Direct services, and Bluetooth, into a compact design. The portable navigation system offers the best and most accurate speech recognition capabilities we've seen to date.

The bad: The Nuvi 880 is expensive, and route calculations can be sluggish.

The bottom line: As we've come to expect from the Nuvi line, the Garmin Nuvi 880 offers an impressive feature list and solid performance, but it's the accurate speech recognition that really pushes the Nuvi 880 over the edge and makes it one of the best GPS we've tested to date.
