>> Hi, I'm Bonnie Cha, senior editor at CNET.com, and today we are taking a first look at the Garman Nuvi 500. This is a little bit different than the company's other Nuvi devices since it has multiple modes. So you can use it in the car, on your bike, on foot, or in a boat, so that's really nice. As far as the design, they've kept it really compact, since it can be used on foot and on a bike. So that means you're not gonna get the largest screen. It's 3.5, so it's pretty standard. It's easy to switch between the modes, there's a little icon up here that you can just tap between different modes. So you get like a little person for walking mode, and a bicycle for bicycle obviously. It's also waterproof casing, so if you do take it on a boat, it'll hold up okay. Wouldn't submerge it in water, but it will withstand some splashes. As far as features, it comes with maps of the US, street level and topographic. Marine maps are extra, you will have to buy those separately. It has text and voice guided directions. It doesn't have text to speech though, so that was really disappointing. You can download some DO caching trips on here if you're into that as well. I'd say for serious hikers and boaters, I would get a separate dedicated device. This is a good compromise if you can't afford a dedicated device. It's just limited in features, so if you're really serious about those activities, I'd go with a standalone device. It's available now for five hundred dollars. And I'm Bonnie Cha, this has been your first look at the Garman Nuvi 500. ^M00:01:27 [ music ]

Garmin Nuvi 500 Review

The good: The Garmin Nuvi 500 is a multiuse GPS that can be used in the car, on foot, on a bike or a boat. It comes loaded with topographic maps and features a waterproof casing.

The bad: The Nuvi 500 lacks text-to-speech functionality. Satellite acquisition time was a bit slow. A USB cable is not included in the box, and marine maps are extra.

The bottom line: The Garmin Nuvi 500 is a satisfactory multimode GPS, but serious boaters and outdoor enthusiasts should consider dedicated devices.
