preGame 29: Enslaved, Lost in Shadow
Today on preGame we'll demo two very unique titles: Enslaved and Lost in Shadow.
This movie is based upon the popular animated spy TV show of the same title, created by Peter Chung, which aired on MTV in the early 1990s. In the 25th century, a rampaging virus has forced the remnants of humanity into the seclusion of a final city. There is great political conflict within, however, and this is the story of an acrobatic assassin, Aeon Flux (Theron), whose latest target is the government's top leader.
Newburgh, N.Y., which boasts the largest historic district in New York State, was once called "The Best All-American City" by a leading publication. Nearly fifty years later, it has been labeled "The State's Most Violent City". Drugs and crime run rampant. Newburgh's history is not unlike many other Hudson River cities. Urban Renewal destroyed many of the magnificent buildings. The building of a bridge, and the introduction of shopping malls took people away from waterfront shopping. But in Newburgh, the added politics and corruption lead to blight. The 2004 documentary examines the past, then provides a revealing probe into the 2003 administration, which was rife with controversy. "Honest Mayor Wanted: Apply Newburgh, N.Y." bumper stickers were left around the city by outraged citizens after $380,000 of city funds were mysteriously transferred to friends of the mayor. An underground web-site sprung up discussing both political and personal issues. As four candidates began their bid for the job of mayor, the notion of "working together to make this a better place" seemed far-fetched. The film follows each candidate in their bid for the mayor's seat, as well as several prominent Newburgh citizens, 'fighting' to bring the city back.
The eerie and deserted ghost town of Silent Hill draws a young mother desperate to find a cure for her only child's illness. Unable to accept the doctor's diagnosis that her daughter should be permanently institutionalized for psychiatric care, Rose (Radha Mitchell) flees with her child, heading for the abandoned town in search of answers -- and ignoring the protests of her husband (Sean Bean). It's soon clear this place is unlike anywhere she's ever been. It's smothered by fog, inhabited by a variety of strange beings and periodically overcome by a living Darkness that literally transforms everything it touches. As Rose searches for her little girl, she begins to learn the history of the strange town and realizes that her daughter is just a pawn in a larger game. Starring Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean, Laurie Holden, Deborah Kara Unger, Kim Coates, Tanya Allen, and Jodelle Ferland.
In a city ravaged by violent crime, the police department's anti-gang task force uses any means at its disposal to get the bad guys off the streets, with cops often acting as judge, jury and executioner. As the unit's self-justifying brutality and corruption spiral further out of control, gang member-turned-cop Armando Sancho (Clifton Collins Jr.) begins to question the life he and his partner Salim Adel (Cuba Gooding Jr.) have chosen. So when Internal Affairs agents investigating the division's abuses offer him a deal to come clean about the unit's misdeeds, Sancho must decide whether to heed his conscience or his loyalty to his fellow officers. On the hot, smoggy day Salim and Sancho are scheduled to testify to IA, the two rogue cops agree to run a lucrative, illegal operation for the station's top brass (Keith David and Cole Hauser). As their increasingly bloody mission takes them from one end to the other of the sprawling city they've sworn to protect and serve, Salim and Sancho learn that getting clean isn't nearly as easy as being "Dirty". Wyclef John also stars.
