Four Tet:
Created: 06/29/2006
Video description: Continuing a long-held DJ Kicks tradition, Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet) has contributed a brand new Four Tet track, specially created for his forthcoming 'DJ Kicks' compilation. Entitled 'Pockets' and released as an exclusive 12? single on June 12th, this is the only new Four Tet material to appear this year.'Pockets' is trademark Four Tet: a bona-fide euphoric dancefloor filler?Although by now we all surely expect nothing less from an artist and producer so widely revered for consistent innovation and creativity. This exclusive DJ Kicks track is an infectious and expertly-mixed brew of layered, stabbing synths and dominant fussion jazz percussion (which seems to teeter on the brink of fully-fledged wig-out throughout), as well as a crescendo chorus of xylophones, chimes, and of course a host of distinctively 'Four Tet' electronic elements. A heady mix indeed. For a man known primarily for his home made excursions to the far reaches of the musical map, Kieran Hebden as a DJ is a different kind of trip, the gratifying results of which can be seen all over his exemplary 'DJ Kicks' compilation, due for release on June 26th.Four Tet's DJ Kicks is a mind blowing experience, taking in just about as many genres as there are tracks (which is 20). Old skool hip-hop, French prog, conscious electronic experimentation, minimal techno, early two-step, cosmic jazz, African thumb pianos and much more besides share space here, bound together by analogue synth interludes and of course, 'Pockets'.The pure soul genius of Curtis Mayfield sits alongside the likes of David Behman's 'Leap-day Night (Scene 1)', the squelchy and off-kilter techno of Model 500's 'Psychosomatic', Animal Collective, Akufen, the early 90's major label hip-hop of Showbiz & AG's 'Represent', 'Autechre's 'Flutter', Madvillain (a Four Tet favourite and longtime collaborator), Heiner Stadler, and the cosmic jazz of Julian Priester and Pepe Mtoto's 'Love, Love'. Even So Solid Crew's (the local Wandsworth lads who bedazzled the young Kieran with their fearless experimentation) 'Dilemma' finds a happy home on the diverse mix.

Datarock: "FaFaFa"

Their first full-length CD, Datarock Datarock (Nettwerk Music Group June 12, ), takes the feel-good vibe of "Computer Camp Love," turns it up to 11, and blasts a power chord of throwback nostalgia that'll knock you straight out of your Reebok Pumps. Love letters to Laurie Anderson ("Laurie") and references to Close Encounters of the Third Kind ("Princess") are just the tip of the iceberg. The album's infectious first single, "Fa Fa Fa," pairs up dance-rock drums with funk-strummed guitars and a chorus that'll have you jonesing for the nearest copy of Talking Heads' 77. "Ugly Primadonna," meanwhile, is pure four/four Groovebox robotics and space age Casiotone melodies.†† On "I Will Always Remember You" (featuring Annie), Fredrik does his best Wayne Newton, verbally undressing you with his velvety pipes over a bed of freeze-dried strings before formally "sexing you down" on "Sex Me Up." But more so than any other track on the album, the opening "Bulldozer" perhaps best encapsulates the band's true modus operandi. Whereas Kraftwerk glorified the Trans-Europe Express and the Tour de France, Datarock prefer to sing the praises of a more proletarian method of transportation: the BMX. Which, according to the Fredrik and Ket-Ill, "is better than sex."

Para One: "Dun Dun"

Para One is one of the leaders of the French new school. Known for his killer track "Dun Dun" (remixed from MSTRKRFT) and remixes of Agoria, Krazy Baldhead, Ellen Alien (with Tacteel) and Daft Punk, among others. His musics been played by a wide array of the dance floors elite from Feadz, Erol Alkan, Diplo, Modeselektor and Justice to Laurent Garnier, DJ/Rupture, Team Shadetek and Michael Mayer. "Dun Dun" is both the hardest, most ruthless and loveliest, most idyllic techno track in a long time. These tracks are tailor-made for the club, the dancefloor, the moment when the world dissolves into strobes, heat and sound, when the dancers move whether they like it or not, barely breathing machines operated by way of drugs, snares and synths.

The Comas: "Conductor"

Conductor started as a collection of songs written in the winter of 2003 at house on the North Carolina coast. Cold winds blowing in from the Atlantic would often rustle palms and wind chimes on the porches of of empty beach houses. The steady noise made it a little easier for a string of break-ins to continue. Baffling local authorities. Although most of the houses were boarded up that winter, a few remained occupied. One of these, lit almost exclusively by candle light in the evening, housed a 4 track recorder, an acoustic guitar, a small city of wine bottles (both full and empty), and Andy Herod. At the end of a 2 year relationship and faced with having to find a new place to live in 6 weeks, the songs began to come out. Loss of love and identity and all that. Eventually each night he ended up on the couch watching the only movie that made sense or mattered, Dark City. Upon each viewing finding new meaning, symbolism and hope that seemed to apply directly to his own life. Some felt that this period may have gone on a bit long... At the end of the winter several cassette tapes where passed along to band mate Nicole Gehweiler as well as friend and producer Alan Weatherhead. A record was soon underway. Recorded at the Sound of Music studios in Richmond VA, Conductor ended up a swampy mix of pop and fuzzed-out rock songs. But when it came time to sequence the record, the band was stumped. Finally one smoky evening in the studio around 4 am, a story line began to reveal itself in the music they were hearing. Almost instantly, the track order fell into place and plans to animate the story began. Six weird months later came Conductor, a monument to the suicide of love erected by robots against a wintry sci-fi back drop of dark towers, moonlit skies and a cast of lost characters. Or perhaps it is just a break-up record. It is not yet known. What is known is that it's here, and it's massive.
