Burning Man: What's the fascination for Silicon Valley?
In 1986, on a San Francisco beach, about 20 participants got together to burn an 8-foot structure of a man, and thus was born Burning Man. Twenty years later, the festival, which now takes place in the northern Nevada desert, is expected to attract some 35,000 people when it takes place next week. For some reason, Burning Man has occupied a special place in the hearts of techies. Join CNET News.com Charlie Cooper as he looks at why with Burning Man veterans Jennifer Guevin, Elinor Mills and Declan McCullagh during this week's edition of the CNET News.com Reporters' roundtable.\r\n\r\n

The 404 448: Where we somehow fit Family of the Year in our studio
They said it couldn't be done, but we managed to fit an entire Family in our 12x 12-foot studio; and besides, The 404 Podcast has never been that great at following orders. Today's episode welcomes Vanessa, Joe, Sebastian, James, Christina, and Brent from the band Family of the Year, who submit themselves to a chat about their new EP Where's the Sun, new music marketing 2.0, Bogie Ogretrons, which band member has the longest legs, and what it's like to share a shower with six other people in a tiny RV touring across the country.
"Miles Electric" DVD clip: "They never played like that again"
Musicians who played in Miles Davis' band speak to the transformative power of playing with the trumpeter and bandleader. This footage is from the DVD "Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue" which features interviews with many musicians who he collaborated with on the later electric records and live footage from his 1970 performance at the Isle of Wight festival.

Formed by Kristin Hersh in 2003, 50 Foot Wave released a self-titled mini album last year - 6 blistering songs whose electrifying energy astonished anyone who encountered them. Now the band follow that up with "Golden Ocean", their full-length debut. 50 Foot Wave is Hersh's first new band since she founded the influential Throwing Muses, and it's a harder, faster, more direct experience than anything she has recorded before. Kristin sums up her vision for 50 Foot Wave thus : "What could be more fun that turning everything up to 10 and screaming your head off for an hour every night?"
X-Press 2 featuring Tim De Laughter: "Witchi tai to"
Presenting, for your foot-tapping pleasure and mind-expanding enjoyment, the men of X-Press 2. The last time they were here, their humongous fanbase propelled their vinyl-only 12-inches (i.e.: "London X-Press," "Muzik X-Press," "The Sound")— sold sans barcodes— thumping up the charts. But they've been away for a while, sweating in the DJ trenches, frequenting international clubs aplenty, trapped in the studio with Sixties sunshine-pop LPs, wrangling vocal stars from far and wide. But four years after they—and The Talking Heads' David Byrne—swaggered to #2 on the UK pop charts) in the charts with "Lazy," then waltzed home with an Ivor Novello Award (how proper is that?), the X-Press 2 three are back.
Second Sun: "Through Each Kinder Day"
We began by shooting the band against black over four hours in the lighting company AFM's test studio. Tim hung Kinoflow tubes from the ceiling and exposed only for the lamp so as to give the appearance of floating strips of light. The initial idea was to then film the band in a dense wood and dissolve between the two, however when we got to the location the next day the fields around it had turned into a lake, so we abandoned that idea and moved to a nearby service bridge over the A3. We set the band up on the bridge and drove our three cars backwards and forwards past the band at break neck speed through an eight foot gap between them and the camera and with a 30 ft stopping distance, otherwise they'd be in the hedge. I then cut it to try and give the the illusion of the band playing on a motorway. Originally the promo was to be more story lead showing the relationship between a man and a woman breaking down. We filmed this in Battersea Park and on the North bank of the Thames on a 16mm Bolex but had serious light leak issue. So, being on a budget of zero pounds, reshooting was out of the question. We salvaged the best of the footage and cut it in around the performance.

Oasis: "Lord Don't Slow Me Down"
What happens when a film maker follows one of the world's biggest bands on a year long world tour? What happens when the film maker is granted unique access to that band, is present for the ups and downs, the moments of greatness and the periods of the same interview in 10 different languages in as many days? What happens when that band is Oasis, travelling across 26 countries on their biggest world tour to date playing to a total of over 2 million people? The answer is Lord Don't Slow Me Down (Big Brother/Hip-O/UMe), a double DVD set that not only gives you the definitive feature length documentary seen in selected cinemas last year, but also the option of voice over commentaries from the band, a Noel Gallagher Q & A session with fans from New York City, out takes from the film, and a second 90 minute bonus disc capturing the band's homecoming show at the City of Manchester Stadium together with footage sent in by fans from around the world who attended that show. If you wanted to know what the members of Oasis make of their lives on tour and their audience, then the answers are on these two discs. Directed by Baillie Walsh who has previously worked with Massive Attack (he made 'Safe From Harm'), Spiritualized, New Order and Kylie's Slow, and is now working on a film with Daniel Craig, this DVD set is a compendium of Oasis entertainment par excellence.
