>> David Carnoy: I'm David Carnoy, Executive Editor for CNET.com, and I'm here to give you a video tour of the Flip Video Ultra. This is the second-generation Ultra, and this is actually the standard definition version. There is a high-definition version called the Ultra HD. The two models are very similar on the exterior. This model happens to have a shinier plastic finish. It doesn't have the matte kind of rubberized finish of the Ultra HD, but otherwise they pretty much look the same. They come with the same two-inch LCD. It's a sharp LCD compared to the 1.5-inch LCD found on the older Ultra. The buttons are also a little bit bigger on the back. That makes it a little bit easier to see them and press them. This model shoots in standard definition that's 640 by 480 resolution, and there are four gigabytes of internal memory that allows you to shoot about two hours of video. There's no expansion slot for memory cards, which is too bad, but you do get a fair amount of recording time in that two hours. Once you've shot your video, you can transfer it via the Flip Out USB connector. Flip is known for its Flip Out USB connector. It's very easy to upload your videos to YouTube and other video file-sharing services. Aside from the fact that this model captures low resolution video, one of the key differences between this and the Ultra HD is its battery option. This one only comes with AA alkaline batteries. There's no rechargeable battery pack that comes with this model. Since it doesn't shot HD video, you don't need an HDMI output. There's just a TV out, and it does come with a composite video cable for outputting to TV's. So that cable is included with this model. For a lot of people, the real question is going to be whether to buy the Ultra or the Ultra HD, and I'd say if you can afford the Ultra HD, you're going to be better off stepping up to that model particularly with the rechargeable battery option and the better video. However, if this model dips down to around 120, it becomes a much more attractive buy. This model is simple to use. The video is solid for standard definition video, and in terms of a good choice for budget mini camcorders, the Ultra certainly fits the bill. Flip Ultra (second gen, white) Review
The good: Decent video for a VGA budget mini camcorder; easy to use; good low-light performance; 4GB memory holds 2 hours of video; FlipShare software is compatible with both Mac and Windows machines.
The bad: No memory card slot; no rechargeable battery included.
The bottom line: Flip Video has made some modest improvements to the original Ultra--but it's only worth buying at a reasonable discount off its list price.
