>> Hi, I'm Molly Wood from CNET.com here at the Apple campus taking our first look at the new Iwork Application Suite from Apple. Now a big announcement to the Iwork Suite is the addition of a new spreadsheet called Numbers obviously enough. Numbers is meant to be a way to design gorgeous looking spreadsheets, which I think, is something that is very appealing to consumers not necessarily top of the list for real spreadsheet nerds. But, you know, it is nice to have things that look good. Also though, it does have some pretty handy features like the ability to kind of drag and resize elements of the spreadsheet without changing it. It has more obviously named features of the ability to sum. For example amounts and averages without having to write complex formulas. So definitely meant to be a more accessible spreadsheet and will most likely be popular with consumers who are might be a little baffled by XL. Other changes to the Iworks Suite include new visual themes for the keynote presentation maker. Also, some changes to the pages word possessor, which was previously more useful just for laying out pages like newsletters or brochures. [Inaudible] mentioned people were interested in using it as an actual word possessor, which is actually not that surprising. Now you can do that by using a word possessor mode instead of the page layout mode so you can switch between those two. Again, this is Iwork 08. The good: The new Numbers spreadsheet software rounds off this suite, which offers attractive and intuitive interfaces; solid new features for image editing, page layout and printing; applications integrate well with each other, with iWeb, and with Apple iLife; and they read Microsoft Office 2007 files.
The bad: Apple iWork '08 lacks an e-mail application; pivot tables and Visual Basic macros not supported.
The bottom line: Although Microsoft Office 2007 offers deeper features, particularly for number crunchers, Apple iWork '08 is a strong Mac productivity package and a pleasure to use.
