Firefox OS on the ZTE Open Video Transcript
Hi. This is Steven Shanklin for CNET News. I'm here in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress Show with Brendan Eich, Chief Technology Officer of Mozilla. And we're here to look at the ZTE Open. This is one of the first Firefox OS phones. The ZTE Open is a phone-based on a Qualcomm referenced design. The ones we are testing today had an 800MHz single core ARM Snapdragon Processor made by Qualcomm. But when they actually ship, they'll come with a 1 GHz processor. They're pretty low-end machines with 256 MB of RAM and 512 MB of flash memory. It's got an Adreno GPU, also from Qualcomm. The screen has SVGA resolution. It's not a very responsive touch screen and it doesn't have a very good field of view. So if you're looking at it from an angle, it can be hard to read and it can be a little hard to type on the keyboard but it's still early days for Firefox OS so there could be more software optimizations and of course we'll see higher-end phones with better touchscreen as well. From Barcelona and Mobile World Congress, this is Steven Shanklin with CNET News with the first look at the ZTE Open Firefox OS phone.
The Geeksphone Peak is a higher-end phone running a new operating system from Firefox.
What does a smartphone based on the Firefox browser look like? Here's one ultracheap handset that paves the way for Firefox phones.
Equipped with Android 4.0 and a slideout four-row keyboard, the Kyocera Rise from Sprint is a midrange handset for messaging enthusiasts.
The Asus P5E3 Deluxe has a Firefox Web browser (running on an embedded Linux operating system) burned into ROM. It also has Skype. You turn it on, and in fifteen seconds (I timed it), you can be in Firefox and surfing the Web.
The latest Ubuntu release--code named Jaunty Jackalope--boots faster, shuts down faster, and includes numerous improvements that help it become even more easy to use than before. If you like open-source software like Firefox, you owe it to yourself to see what an open-source operating system can do.
The Motorola Bravo is a mid-range Android smartphone with solid multimedia features.
Maingear's Vybe is the first desktop in our lab with AMD's new six-core Phenom II X6 processor. That chip alone can't save this system from tough competition among mid-ranged gaming PCs, but if the Vybe isn't the best all-around PC at this price, it has some impressive gaming chops. Just be prepared to make a few sacrifices along the way.
The bookmark system in Firefox has changed. Here's what you need to know.
Songbird is a media player and Web browser built from Firefox's engine. Songbird is open-source and supports user-contributed, cross-platform extensions.
Switch through 50 or more search engines from the Firefox search box.
ZTE Open Review
The good: ZTE's Open is an attractive smartphone that represents Firefox OS's budget aspirations.
The bad: Hardware performance suffers all across the board, from image quality to the time it takes to complete a task. Call quality wasn't so hot, either.
The bottom line: Skip the ZTE Open and keep hunting for your low-cost smartphone, unless simplicity or Firefox development are at the top of your list.
