>> Hi, I'm Kent German, senior editor here at CNET.com. Today we're gonna take a first look at the Firefly glowPhone. This is one of two new phones for Firefly Mobile, which is a manufacturer of phones for kids and younger people. It is very basic, has no keypad or no traditional controls, it's really designed only to call the certain people that are in the phonebook. And you can even it set it to receive calls only from those people. I think if you are a parent, and you're looking for a phone with parental controls, this isn't a bad fit. But that is, if you can find a kid that's willing to use it. It doesn't have a camera. It can only receive text messages. It cannot send. So it doesn't have a lot of popular features that really, younger kids are asking for these days. Here on the front, we do have a color display, which is great. The original firefly had a monochrome display. Menu system is also a little better, can cycle through them like that, and then select with a central button here. The phone also comes with two buttons for -- that are really supposed to be for mom and dad numbers, but you can program it to an aunt, an uncle, a friend, anybody you'd like. The phone also comes with an emergency button right here. You can program this button as well with any number you'd like. It doesn't have to be 911. Right below is the 2.5-millimeter headset jack, and there's a volume rocker on this side. Underneath is the mini USB port. That's for the charger or for connecting the phone to a computer if you'd like. As I said, the features are very basic, not much really there. You can use the phone as a flashlight. You activate the feature, and the screen just glows white. A couple of really basic games, but no web browser, camera, Bluetooth, music player, anything like that. However, the phone does have voicemail, which is great because the original Firefly did not. So that a fills a big gap in the original product. I'm Kent German, and this is the Firefly glowPhone. ^M00:01:35 [ Music ]

Firefly GlowPhone (pink) Review

The good: The Firefly GlowPhone is easy to use and comes with a set of parental controls. It also offers voice mail and an improved display.

The bad: The Firefly GlowPhone can only read text messages. Also, call quality wasn't reliable.

The bottom line: If you can find a child willing to use it, the Firefly GlowPhone is a decent cell phone for keeping in touch with your brood.
