>> Molly: Social networks are a lot of fun but they can also be dangerous. A whopping 70% more companies reported receiving spam and viruses through online social networks in 2009 than in the previous year. On top of that privacy advocates criticize Facebook for its new privacy settings, which went to affect in December. So what are the 3 Facebook settings you should know to keep yourself safe? First, know who can see the things you share. The new Facebook default for this setting is everyone on the Internet, so to change this go to Settings and then click Privacy Settings from your profile page. Click Profile Information from the list of choices and change the posts by me setting to Only Friends. Second, who can see your personal information? Go back to Profile Information in Privacy Settings, select Only Friends. And third, click Search on the choices on the next page. On this page uncheck the box labeled Allow next to Public Search Results. Now, Facebook does defend its privacy settings as flexible but it's really not very nice to set your defaults to everyone, in my opinion.
