Ep. 790: Where toothless Tim tells tall tales Video
Leaked from today's episode of The 404: Ashton Kutcher signed on to play Steve Jobs in biopic (not a joke), April Fools tech pranks, and self-driving cars aren't as far away as we thought!
Scott Stein fills in for Wilson, who is spending a sick day at home crawling WebMD on his iPad. Today's show discusses a phenomena known as "Netflix hoarding," a new service called Cloud Girlfriend, and we suggest a few April Fool's day pranks for nerds.
Once again this year, we've had it with April Fool's jokes. Except for one. You'll see. If you're more tired of iPad than you are of April Fool's, skip the first half of the show where we recap other people's reviews since Apple refuses to give us an iPad early. Also, we debunk Microsoft's claims that Chrome is fundamentally insecure, which almost ought to be a joke.
April Fools' Day isn't particularly special for The 404 since we prank each other all year, but that doesn't stop the rest of the Internet (or Natali Del Conte) from participating. Google continues its tradition of April Fools' Day hoaxes with a new Android app that finally bridges the language gap between humans and our furry friends.
We didn't think it would take this long, but somebody finally exploited the iPhone 4S to catch a cheater using the new Find My Friend app on iOS 5. In that same vein, today we're chatting about our favorite tech pranks along with the latest news headlines that include Blackberry freebies, iPhone record breaking, cell phone bill shock, and a fishy story out of Sesame Street.
Natali Morris fills in for Wilson Tang today and assures our mutual destruction when she "accidentally" spills hot water on the mixer console...the rest of the show is spent worrying about spontaneous electrocution, but we manage to fit in a handful of stories about 3D lego printing, the strange trend of unboxing videos, our favorite April Fool's tech product, and the ongoing "Porn Wikileaks" fallout.
Bridget Carey just got back from the launch of the iPhone 4S at the Apple store here in Manhattan, so we pull her into the studio to tell us about all the kooks lined up for first dibs. Despite all the problems users are experience with iOS 5 updates, everyone in line for one left with a 4S, though Bridget tells us not many users were anxious to test out Sprint or Verizon's network. Where's Wilson today? Guess.
April Fools' Day is a national holiday for geeks. Here are some of the best ways to celebrate.
Bonus footage from the April Fools Day episode.
This is not an April Fools' joke: We have the iPad, two days before launch. Plus, eBay rolls out a new fashion site, and Google changes its name to Topeka for a day.
