>> John: I'm John Falcone, Senior Editor at CNET.com and this is the Denon DHT-FS3; this is a 1.1 audio system. The package includes a single speaker designed to sit below the TV plus a stand-alone subwoofer. There's no on-screen display but a large LCD screen lights up from behind the grill displaying a basic alpha numeric read out. Behind the non-removable grill you'll also find 5 3 1/8th inch drivers driven by separate 22 watt amps, there's a 6th passive driver as well. The matching subwoofer is quite trim it's a 15 inch square that's less than 4 1/2 inches wide, Denon includes a 10 foot long connecting cable as well. There's no automatic speaker calibration but set up is a breeze just choose 1 of the 3 room sizes and then go into the detailed settings to adjust the sound to your preference for speaker distance, bass, and treble. Denon's proprietary X-Space Surround technology works in conjunction with Dolby digital and DTS processing. The big sound stage was as available for listeners at either end of the sofa as it was from the center of the couch avoiding the one person sweet spot found on some of these single speaker audio systems. Music generally sounded better in stereo than in surround mode. The biggest drawback with the DHT-FS3 is the connectivity offerings, there're 2 stereo Analog inputs, 3 digital inputs and a dock control input for use with Denon's ASD1R iPod doc, but there are no video connections what so ever. It can't really come close to a dedicated 5.1 speaker system for projecting sound behind you. Compared to other single speaker systems, however, the Denon DHT-FS3 is a worthwhile contender. The good: Elegant and compact single-speaker plus subwoofer virtual surround system; accommodates two analog, three digital audio sources; optional iPod dock; headphone jack with Dolby Headphone processing; wall-mounting brackets included.
The bad: Expensive; dearth of HDMI or other video connectivity means your TV will need to handle video switching duties; setup may take some tweaking for optimal sound.
The bottom line: While it's a bit lean on features, Denon's compact DHT-FS3 delivers big room-filling sound.
