>> Hi I'm Rich Brown, senior editor for CNET dot com. Today we're gonna take a look at the Dell XPS124. This is Dell's relatively new 24 inch all in one computer. This particular config costs about 2,000 dollars and Dell kind of fashions this computer as a self contained home entertainment system with a little bit of productivity thrown in. Now it's actually a fairly straightforward computer. There's a few features in it that we've come to expect from all in one's, but it also has a few cool features built into the display. And because of it's large screen and it's home entertainment capabilities, you might not use this computer in a traditional desk-office kind of setting. Instead you may have it on the countertop or someplace where you can walk up and use it. So Dell's kind of thought of that and there's a pretty cool motion sensitive control panel here, along the edge. You get a bunch of media controls, volume controls, you can play, pause, stop, mute. It's pretty handy and it means you don't have to kind of tuck in in front of the thing with the keyboard and mouse. By it's walkup usability, it's a pretty handy feature. On the side here you have a slot loading Blu-Ray drive, a pop as a webcam - pretty universal to all in one's at this point. Over here on this side we have a smartcard reader, pair of USB ports, as well as a mini FireWire, and 2 audio jacks. Get around back you'll see more USB's, a full size FireWire, Ethernet, digital audio output as well as an input for a TV signal. We mentioned this computer is good for doing a little bit of work, and that's because it comes with a quadcore CPU. That's not very common in all in one PC's, although we think it's gonna start to pick up. The problem though is that Dell sent this system with 32 bit Vista. That's the only operating system that comes with it, and because of that it can't take advantage of all it's memory. They'd gone 64 bit, it would have done a little better. I'm Rich Brown; this is the Dell XPS 124. ^m00:01:39 [ music ]

Dell XPS One 24 (PRODUCT) RED Review

Editors' rating

The good: Sharp, bright 24-inch LCD; Blu-ray burner; handy capacitive-touch screen and media controls; strong multimedia performance.

The bad: Fixed stand prevents wall-mounting; lack of 64-bit Vista hurts performance; few inspired extras.

The bottom line: The (PRODUCT) RED version of Dell's XPS One 24 is the most fully featured of Dell's all-in-ones and would serve as a fine PC to anyone in search of a Windows-based all-in-one for basic digital entertainment and productivity tasks. A few more innovations or forward-thinking options would earn a warmer recommendation.
