>> Hi, this is Eric Franklin from CNET.com, and today we're looking at the Dell UltraSharp 3008WFP. Now I know it maybe a little hard to see, but if you squint just a little bit, you may be able to. Once you actually can see it though, the first thing you'll notice is just how darn pretty it looks. This is hands-down the best looking 30-inch display we've yet seen. I mean here check out the glossy foot stand, the metallic bezel overlay. I mean, this thing just screams style and elegance. Also, you get about 25 degrees of rotation left and right. You get height adjustment via the cantilever neck design, which also provides stability if you're knocking the display from the right or left. As with all 30-inchers, the display has a native resolution of 2560 by 1600. But it's the first 30-incher with display options of the unbrightness control. It includes a full five-button OSD where you can customize brightness, contrast, saturation and hue. It also includes 8 different preset modes. You also get many, many, many connection options. That's two DVI ports along with HDMI, VGA, Component, DisplayPort, Composite, and S-Video. All of which are easily accessed from the back. Unfortunately, Dell only includes cables for the DVI and DisplayPort. Also, it would have been nice to see a coaxial connection for HDTV over-the-air antenna, but no dice here. Non-video connection options include four USB upstream ports and one downstream port. It also includes a Compact Flash and SD card reader. We were unimpressed with the way the display handles color and DisplayMate and while watching movies. When viewing movies in the movie preset, we saw some color problems creep up on us. This preset mode allows you to adjust the color saturation hue, but we can never adjust it to our satisfaction. This is a beautiful looking $2000 display with tons of features. We encountered many more color problems than we expected during a DVD and Blu-ray playback and the black levels were very disappointing as well. You have to do a lot of tweaking if you plan to watch movies on this thing. The 30-inch Gateway XHD3000 Extreme HD can be found for as low as 1450 online and is a better performer, but it has fewer connection options and less flashy looks. So unless aesthetics and connection options are paramount, we recommend the cheaper and better performing Gateway monitor. Dell UltraSharp 3008WFP Review
The good: Incredible amount of features and connection options; very impressive aesthetic quality; looks great with games and normal office tasks.
The bad: Very expensive even for a 30-inch model with so many features; color performance with movies was extremely lacking; no built-in sound; no coaxial connection for an HDTV over-the-air antenna.
The bottom line: If you're willing to pay the price for beautiful looks and loads of connection options in a 30-inch LCD monitor, you'll like what you get with the Dell 3008WFP. You may be less enthused with this display, however, after experiencing its lackluster color performance and low black levels when watching movies.
