>> I'm Dan Ackerman and we are here with the Dell I15-157B. Now that kind of a mouthful of a name means that this is one of those retail systems. They are fixed configuration. You go to a big store, you just buy it in the box, off the shelf, ready to go -- that's a very popular choice for a lot of people now. Dell's basic 15-inch laptops have always been great. You can always go online, configure them however you want. This particular model is very stripped down. It's about 650 bucks, comes with a very basic design, that's glossy black here, matte black on the back of the lid. Now Dell's even very inexpensive systems used to have some cool extras like touch-media controls, like an HDMI output. This particular model has none of that stuff. It is about as stripped down as you can get, just literally just a power button and nothing else. We are however, pleased to see a decent Core 2 Duo CPU, a nice sized 320-gig hard drive and Dell is finally embracing this 16 by 9 aspect ratio on the screen that's the slightly wider display that you're seeing on a lot of laptops now that's the same as the big HD TV over in your living room. You get all the basics you need like USB ports and SD card slot, a DVD burner, but for about 50 bucks more, you can probably trade up to a machine with a lot more option. I'm Dan Ackerman and that's the Dell I15-157B. ^M00:01:20 [ Music ]

The ST2310 has a low price and is good for everyday tasks, but it lacks some of the extra features included with similarly priced displays.

Dell Inspiron Mini 10

Dell's popular Mini 10 is the most customizable Netbook we've seen. Adding extras such as a higher-resolution screen makes it more useful, but also blurs the price line between Netbooks and mainstream laptops.

Dell Inspiron 1420

Dell introduces the new 14-inch Inspiron 1420 laptop, which benefits from a wide range of configuration options, meaning that virtually any mainstream user can find a system to fit their budget.

HP zv6000

The HP zv6000 is a 7.9-pound, mainstream notebook computer. Compared to other mainstream consumer notebooks on the market, it is very inexpensive at around $850.

eMachines T3092

You'll be hard-pressed to find a more well-rounded desktop at this price level; the eMachines T3092 deserves a spot on any budget buyer's short list.

Dell Studio Hybrid

The Studio Hybrid is Dell's first small form factor PC. Compared with other systems, it's one of the smallest and best equipped small desktops around, though it does come with a slightly higher price tag.

eMachines T3646

The eMachines T3646 is one of the cheapest desktops available, and, unfortunately, it shows. It offers some compelling performance, but basic capability is more important in budget systems, and we found that this system came up short compared with others in its price range.

Grace ITC-IR1000B Wireless Internet Radio

While it lacks even some basic extras, the Grace Wireless Internet Radio delivers smooth Internet radio via Wi-Fi at a relatively affordable price.

Philips NP1100/37

The Philips NP1100/37 lacks the bells and whistles of some other network digital audio players, but it should satisfy those looking for basic streaming on a budget.

Sony VAIO VGX-TP25E Home Theater PC

The Sony VAIO VGX-TP25E Home Theater PC's looks and features may draw you in, but considering its price and what it lacks, we hope you'll turn away. Other vendors systems offer similar capabilities, but for much less money.

Dell I15-157B Review

Editors' rating

The good: Inexpensive system with 4GB of RAM and 64-bit OS.

The bad: Missing the media controls and HDMI port from previous versions; middling battery life.

The bottom line: This retail version of Dell's basic Inspiron 15-inch, the I15-157B, is a textbook mainstream budget computer, but lacks some of the extras you'll find in other comparably priced laptops.
