If you're looking for a capable color laser multi-function device for a small business, this Dell Printer does high quality docs that you won't be ashamed to pass around the board room. Hi. I'm Justin (New?), Printer Editor for CNET.com. This is your first look at the Dell 1355 CNW Color Laser Printer. So this business-ready device earns my solid recommendation for small businesses that want the option to print in color but aren't necessarily planning to print a lot of snap shot photos. It works well with Mac and Windows systems. But it's single, 150-sheet input tray is why I'm limiting its recommendation for small businesses. So if you print a lot, you'll find yourself constantly refilling that paper tray. You can also load 10 sheets of thicker media into this bypass tray on the friendly printer or you can stack up to 15 sheets of plain paper into the top auto document feeder here. That's great for hands-free scanning or copying of documents. So setting up the printer is also really easy and you have three options for connectivity. First, a hard wired USB connection for individual users and Ethernet port on the back for multiple users to print on a network or you can connect by WiFi and all through and really easy to set up. Even better, Dell actually includes a USB cable in the box to get you started and the printer uses one black cartridge and three color cartridges for cyan, magenta and yellow. Dell puts the cartridge loader on the side to save space on the machine and the operating cost for color laser printers are still slightly higher than ink jets depending on your outputs. So keep that in mind. That being said, 7.1 cents per black page and 7.8 cents for a page of color is still pretty affordable in terms of the range for Dell's standard size cartridges. To boot, Dell also sells high capacity toner cartridges for a discount if you're willing to spend more upfront. In terms of print speed, the Dell 1355 CNW couldn't keep pace with the competing HP laser jet pro P1606. But the difference is small enough to where you won't notice unless you're printing out more than 50 pages at a time. Now the more important metric for printers is quality. So how does this laser printer stack up to the competition? Well, it fared well in full color documents. Smaller fonts are pretty legible. Lines are dark and well formed and overall, it performed at a level of quality that I would personally feel comfortable distributing in a professional environment.
