DBS: "Neodvolatelne Pravo (Irrevocable Right)"
After the first home recordings in the early 90's, DBS (aka David) got some wider recognition in 1998 when three of his songs appeared on the "legendary" Czech (Karvina) compilations "Rhymes Street Squad". He contributed, along with the rest of Karvina groups and soloists, his next songs on RSS compilations released in 2000 and 2001. He then established the label RS Entertainment with DiGaZ, which in 2003 released a CD re-edition of the "Rhymes Street Squad" compilations, and in 2004 released the albums H.C.F., Odboy and Dva z Moravy. During 2001-2003, he universally played concerts (as forerunner of world stars GangStarr, DJ Vadim, PMD & DJ Honda...), recorded songs for compilations, and worked on his first album. In 2004, DBS released this album at major label Universal Music. Both sides came to an agreement, and on the 8th of November, 2004 Karvina indenpendent label RS Entertainment (in cooperation with Universal Music) released the first DBS album "6ka". At DBS's site www.DBS6ka.com, you can download a lot of audio, video and photo stuff, get his lyrics translated into the English language and get more information about DBS and his activities.
Dragon Fli Empire is a Calgary-based hip hop duo that has quickly gained critical acclaim across Canada and beyond. The team of Teekay (emcee) and Cosm (DJ) aim to "bring the soul back to hip hop" with funky and melodic beats, thought-provoking rhymes and killer cuts. Originally formed as a side collaboration project, the DFE released their first album "Conquest" as a local CD-R in the summer of 2002. It featured "Mount Pleasant", now a Calgary classic. The song recalls observing life while riding the bus over an infectious groove. College radio, local press and countless music lovers gave the tunes rave reviews. The buzz only continued to grow in 2003, with CBC Radio 3 naming "Mount Pleasant" one of their top twenty tracks of the year. 2004 saw even more growth for the DFE. "Conquest" was cleaned up and re-released professionally with some new tracks including the popular "D-E-F". The group continued to receive support from CBC. This included performing on the Radio 3 "Connect the Dots" tour, appearing on the New Music Canada Vol. 1 compilation CD and taping live performances for ZeD-TV. More radio stations began to spin the DFE regularly including CKUA in Edmonton. The group also began to perform more regularly, and to date have opened up for established acts like De La Soul, The Beatnuts, Lyrics Born, Aceyalone, Lyrics Born, Zion I, Afu Ra, Planet Asia, Abstract Rude, Royce da 5'9, Swollen Members and Sweatshop Union. They were also invited to perform at the WCMA Industry Awards at the Palliser Hotel in Calgary. An important detail to note is that the DFE has accomplished all of this without a record deal, distribution or management; while working full time jobs or attending college. The DFE is still going strong. They have been featured on CBC's flagship news program "The National" with Peter Mansbridge and MuchMusic's "Going Coastal" for the prestigious "MUCH does Calgary" showcase. They have also started to take their high-energy live show on the road, playing cities like Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto. Recently, DFE finished their long-anticipated second album- "Invasion". Reflecting three years of added experience, it is a step up from "Conquest" and is certain to give the group even more momentum. The album goes from fun and funky to more serious territory, taking the listener on an enjoyable and diverse journey. Special guests (including Mindbender, Ndidi Cascade, Epic, Ohmega Watts and folk-singer Tariq) plus a sprinkling of live musicians are the icing on the cake for this fantastic sophomore project.
MUNK are Italian Mathias Modica and German partner Jonas Imbery. They release their own records and also the music of friends like HEADMAN, WHOMADEWHO and TOMBOY on their own little label GOMMA - the label that has achieved a quite good fame for releasing this new sound which mixes the aesthetics of 70ies Disco and Krautrock with modern Electronics and House. In the past Gomma has released the debut albums of avant-garde pop artists like MOCKY, HEADMAN, New York sculpturist THE RAMMELLZEE and NICK MACCARTHY (of Franz Ferdinand) with his former band KAMERAKINO. In early February the new label compilation was released. GOMMAGANG 3. It includes recent tracks from the above mentioned artists and also new remixes and guest appearances of The Rapture, DJ Chloe, Midnight Mike, Dirt Crew. It was mixed by the MUNK guys and shows the sound of the Gomma label of the past two years and also the DJ style of MUNK. MUNK have released their critically acclaimed APERITIVO debut album in 2004. The single "Kick Out The Chairs!" still gets played in clubs around the world. The album is one of the first records that preceded the current "Garagedisco" and "Balearic" trend. Including guest vocalists such as their friend JAMES MURPHY of LCD SOUNDSYSTEM/DFA RECORDS, French DJ CHLOE, MIDNIGHT MIKE from London and BOBBY CONN ? the album still sounds fresher than many similar recordings of now. Since "Aperitivo", the guys have been mostly djing around the world. Their very own hot mix of Minimal house and Leftfield Disco gets appreciated more in more and so they are playing a lot of clubs around the world. From places like The Pulp in Paris, Culture Club in Belgium and Berlin clubs like WMF or FUN to fancy parties like the one of Colette shop in Paris and festivals like Sonar and Melt.
Motion Man: "Straight Flowin' On 'Em"
Rhyming since the 80s, Motions sickness on the mic has infected numerous Kool-Keith records ,The wake up show,The Strenth Magazine compilation and dj Vadim"TheTerrorist". While countless rappers say what other rappers have already said, Motion moves away from the rhyme redundancy with a unique abstract approach that can perfectly complement black elvis eccentricity without trying to out Kool Keith. During trips to N.Y,motion has been asked to provide I'D to prove the orgins of his furies style." They didn't believe i was from Northern California when i was rhyming". But its not like Motion is tryin to be out there-its just his everyday steelo... Motion is best known for his guest appearances on Kool Keith?s albums: "Sex Style" (Sly We Fly), "Black Elvis" (Clifton) and "DR Dooom" (Housing Authority). Motion also appears on DJ Vadim?s "The Terrorist" on Ninja Tune and recently cut a track for the highly anticipated Dust Brothers album. Look for Motion Man?s incredible vocal performance on Kut Masta Kurt?s upcoming remix for "1, 2, 3, 4" by Mexico?s Titan on EMI Mexico/Virgin Records. Additionally, Motion is currently featured on Strength Magazine?s compilation album "Sub Text" with the underground classic "Clearing The Field"

Pop Levi has led what one might describe as a melodic life. From childhood his life has been steeped in music. He took up piano at age 3, joined a gospel choir at 7, and started record collecting at 9 just prior to writing his first song. It was a precocious start for an artist who has proved to be a prodigious talent. This English born, LA based multi-instrumentalist was a founder member of avant-garde rock collective Super Numeri before embarking on a global roller coaster ride as bassist with electro pioneers Ladytron. All the while he?s been perfecting his modern spin on rock and soul, releasing two singles on the ?Trons Invicta Hi-Fi label', and carefully crafting his debut solo album. August 2006 sees the release of his first EP on Counter Records. Drawing inspiration from such luminaries as Van Dyke Parks, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye and Syd Barrett, Levi creates his own brand of gloriously funky alt-rock, meticulously piecing together his kaleidoscopic sound from recordings he?s compiled over a ten-year period. The roar of a motorcycle and the Bolan-esque swagger of title track Blue Honey, kicks off this five track EP. Track 2 (A Style Called) Crying Chic sees Levi pay tribute to the sun drenched sounds of 60's west coast America before he struts his stuff on the Zeppelin-heavy guitar riffs of Mournin Light. Penultimate song Baby Again (Midnight Version) has a looser, more experimental feel, prior to more close-vocal harmonising and finger clicking beats from Levi on an alternate recording of album track Skip Ghetto (Echo Park version). The album, The Return To Form Black Magick Party, described by Levi as a truly bizarre whirlwind of classic sounds has been mixed by Thom Monahan, Devendra Banhart's producer, and produced by Pop Levi himself. It is due for release in the New Year. Meanwhile Levi and his band have been astounding audiences with their soulful vocals and guitar pyrotechnics both at home and here in the UK and plan a return trip to the UK in August for a clutch of dates to be announced shortly.
Normally it's a great honour if a big pop band like Franz Ferdinand asks an underground producer to remix a song. If then also Royskopp, Yello, Annie, Mylo and even Roxy Music call the guy and ask for a mix you can be quite sure that the producer must be more than just one of the many new one hit club wonders. And if next this artists starts to record his solo album and people like Soulwax, The Rapture and Radio 4 want to sing on it, it's not unlikely that there is something special going on. All this is happening to Swiss born, but Berlin-based disco producer, DJ and painter Robi Insinna aka Headman. You can easily call Robi one of the leading figures of the new disco movement. His first HEADMAN album "It Rough" was released back in 2003 on the small German label Gomma and set new standards in club circles. It was immediately nominated album of the month" in Jockey Slut Magazine/ UK and called one of the most important and innovative albums of the year by DJ?s such as Trevor Jackson, Ivan Smagghe or even Hell. The title track (with a Chicken Lips re-work on the 12") caused a huge fuss in clubs around the world. Since then he has been building up a worldwide underground reputation as remixer, producer and DJ regularly playing hot clubs like Bugged out or Optimo in the UK as well as Tribeca in New York and FUN in Berlin. This year he even has been invited to play at occasions like the MTV music awards aftershow party in Lissabon or the famous Colette Shop Parties in Paris. He also is currently travelling with SOULWAX as Tour DJ all over Europe. Besides the records on his main label Gomma, Headman has also recently been asked to publish a single on London's Output records. He also started an own little inprint (Relish records) and from time to time he puts out records under his moniker Manhead. But his main project is the HEADMAN music: The Headman style is a very special version of (balearic) Disco, combining the organic sound of 70ies Leftfield Disco and Rock with the energy of 90ies house. The new album includes songs Robi recorded with Stephen Dewaele from Soulwax/2many DJs (he performed on the first single ROH), Matt Safer from The Rapture, Anthony from Radio 4 and Erol Alkan from London?s TRASH Club. The remix for the first single ROH was done by Trevor Jackson aka Playgroup. The second single MOISTURE includes two club mixes by Robi himself and the kicking MUSTAPHA 3000 remix. Robi`s projects are especially notable for their artwork. He studied painting at the famous Brera Art academy in Milan/ Italy and starts to get known also for his big Head paintings. (The ON album will include a 16 page booklet showing paintings made for every song on this CD) For more information for Insinna?s paintings please check out www.relishrecords.com/art (www.headman.org)
