The single pane interface is easily laid out unlike the best converters is intuitive enough for beginners, but also has a range of options for more advanced users. This review focuses on the free trial version of the software available at www.download.com. So, keep in mind that there are some differences for users who purchased the product in full. Okay, there are two ways to get the conversion process going. One is to open the app where you will be prompted to choose the songs you'll be converting. The other is to find the files using Windows Explorer and right-click them. Convert To is the selection that dBpoweramp has placed into the context menu for launching the converter. Here's another trick. If you let the mouse hover, you'll be able to see all the ID3 tags and you can edit them too from the context menu. Let's take a look at the app interface. When it loads there's a drop-down menu formats you can convert to. There are three defaults, but also a long list of codecs you can download. Unfortunately, when you do that, you get whisked away to the download page on the dBpoweramp Website where you go for a full download and installation process for each codec. It would be much more convenient if you download it directly to the app. There's also some flexibility in choosing your compression options, which vary by codec. If you're not sure what each target mean, dBpoweramp's online help file will tell you. You can also adjust for quality and specify your output settings. I really like the option of naming files dynamically and choosing the fields you'd like to include from the drop-down list. Intermediate and advanced users who have purchased the dBpoweramp app will be able to choose from a wide range of effects like your graphics equalizer and track whipping. Finally, the control menu on the conversion window will let you program the end of your computing session after the conversion has finished. That way a big file can do its thing overnight and the app will log off or shut down for you. Sadly, you'll have to take my word for some of these features because the trial for dBpoweramp is a little restrictive. Still, you'll get the idea. I'm Jessica Dolcourt and this has been dBpoweramp. During installation, you have to be careful if you don't want to set JetAudio Basic as the default application for audio and video files. However, the freeware application gives you plenty of reasons to make it your only player. The interface has a modern design that looks like an equalizer. Our only quibble is it treats a playlist as an album but uses the artist as its primary key field, making it difficult to locate mixes. JetAudio Basic's appealing product set should attract audiophiles.
