On one hand, the device works the same as any other network-attached storage devices in the sense that it provides storage space for a network. It can be hooked to a local network via ethernet port on the back here. On the other hand, however, unlike any other NAS devices, the Datto has a very interesting and important additional function. It automatically syncs its entire content to a remote server in real time via the internet. This means wherever you put on the Datto NAS device, is also stored on a remote location.
