D-Link Xtreme N Storage Router DIR-685 Video Transcript

>> Dong: Hello this is Dong Ngo with CNET.com and today and show the latest product from D-Link the Xtreme N storage router DIR-685. First announced at CS 2009 the DIR-685 is an ambitious all in one product mixing of routing, storage and digital fore frame in one tiny compact box. Let's check the box itself. On the left side here you're gonna find the drive bay. Put a laptop SAJ hard drive in here and you've got yourself a nav server. The hard drives will also host the photos you want to show on this LCD on the front here. This LCD is way too small to be taken seriously you can hardly see anything on it from say like 5 feet away. Nonetheless if you want to show your girlfriend or boyfriend a little surprise by putting their photos on here it might just work. There's a blue light here that shows the status of the hard drive inside. It also works as a button that unmounts the hard drive inside and that's a problem. The button is sensitive and you can just very easily press on it when you want to pick up the router. Other than that we realize the mass future of the router it's comprehensive, it supports all kinds of media streaming features and is very easy to manage. The router also has a long list of networking features too; this is not a dual band router, however, meaning it only works in a 2.4 giga hertz band. It is, however, a giga bit router which all is port on the back here being able to deliver the speed up to 1,000 mega bits per second. The router has 2 USB ports these ports support the dealing share port technology; this means with the help of a software application they work just like those on the back of a computer. Performance wise the D-Link offers great wireless throughput speed and a very decent range. We are a little disappointed at the router's network storage performance; however, it is really slow compared to other nav servers. It's even slower than the Apple's Time Capsule which used to be our slowest performer of the year. Nonetheless for the photo frame and the casual file sharing the router will do just fine. If you want to share a lot of data in a network we recommend a separate nav server. With all the bells and whistles the DIR-685 is not cheap costing around $300. To find out if this is a product for you check out the full review at CNET.com. Once again my name is Dong Ngo and this has been the first look at the D-Link Xtreme N Storage Router DIR-685. ^M00:02:33 [ Music ]

D-Link Xtreme N Storage Router DIR-685 Review

The good: The D-Link Xtreme N Storage Router DIR-685 offers fast wireless performance, built-in network storage, photo frame, and a comprehensive set of networking features. Its Web interface is responsive and intuitive.

The bad: The D-Link Xtreme N Storage Router DIR-685 is a single-band router that's more expensive than most, if not all, true dual-band routers. Also, its front-panel LCD/photo frame is too small, the network storage performance is slow, and it doesn't include a hard drive.

The bottom line: The D-Link Xtreme N Storage Router DIR-685 is a very good single-band Wireless-N router; however, its extra features hardly justify the price.
