>> Hello, everyone. This is Dong Ngo for CNET.com, and I have with me today the D-Link DIR-825 Xtreme N dual-band gigabit router. This is the second true dual-band wireless N router from D-Link. The first one was the DIR-855 that we reviewed a while ago. Like the DIR-855, the DIR-825 supports two separate wireless N access points that it can operate simultaneously. One of them broadcasts in the mainstream 2.4-gigahertz frequency, and the other in the cleaner 5-gigahertz frequency. This mean the router can support virtually any existing wireless adaptors. Design wise, the DIR 825 has only two antennae, not three like in the DIR-855 as you can see here. Without the middle antennae, the ports on the back of the DIR-825 are more open and easier to access than those of the DIR-855. The second main difference is the DIR-855 USB port can only be used to host an external hard drive. The new DIR-825 comes with a new technology called shareport that allows for its USB port to work as a network USB port with virtually any USB device. Other than that, the new DIR-825 is a very similar product to the DIR-855 with 4-gigabit Ethernet ports, one gigabit one port. One the front, it has the same array of LED status lights. The router has a very easy to use web interface and supports a wide range of wireless and networking features including Wi-Fi protected set up, port forwarding virtual server, network filter, application rules. It's also supports all of the probably wireless encryption methods, including WPP, WPA Personal, and WPA Enterprise. The D-Link DIR-825 is priced at $190.00 and is available now. However, if you can wait, check back at CNET.com for our full review of the product to see how it performs before making the purchase. Once again, my name's is Dong Ngo, and this has been the First Look at the DIR-825 Xtreme N Dual-band gigabit router from D-Link. ^M00:02:11 [ Music ]

D-Link Xtreme N Dual Band Gigabit Router DIR-825 Review

The good: Virtual networked USB port; mobile router capability; true dual-band; intuitive and responsive browser interface; gigabit LAN and WAN; easy to set up; support separate wireless networks for guests; convenient preset settings.

The bad: Slow mixed mode performance; 5Ghz range could be better; bulky design.

The bottom line: The D-Link Xtreme N Dual Band Gigabit Router DIR-825 is a stable performer with great features and an excellent Web interface. The outdated and bulky design, relatively short range, and merely average throughput, however, lessen its appeal.
