>> Do you like having a home computer that's a little squirrely with file formats? A video podcast come in at H dot 264 files. I ripped some standard def DVD's as MPEG files and some widescreen blockbusters is 720P dubex files. My computer plays them all perfectly, but if I ever want to take them on my iPod or my Zune, I have to spend hours re-encoding. It's a pain. Cowan has the right idea. In fact we're gonna take a first look at their 02 portable video player. The Cowan 02 portable video player features a 4 point 3 inch touch screen LCD that can display almost any video file format you can imagine at any combination of sizes, all the way up to 1280 by 720. Now you're not gonna store a huge video library on here because the 02 is only offered in 8, 16, and 32 gigabyte capacities. Still, you can fit a ton of videos with 32 gigabytes of space and with this high capacity SD card slot on the side, you can swap out content on the fly and double the storage capacity. Even better, you're not gonna break the bank. The 02's 3 capacity's sell at 219, 249, and 299 dollars, available in both black and white. Alright, so it's a great portable video player but what else can it do? The 02 includes an audio player with an equally impressive amount of format support. Too many to list actually, but the big names here are MP3, AAC, Flack, WMA, and Apple Lossless. You get a photo viewer compatible with JPEG, TIF, and even raw image formats; a voice recorder, text viewer, and some widgets like a calculator and a notepad. Battery life is rated at 8 hours of video and 18 hours of audio, which is not so great for audio but 8 hours of video makes this one of the longest lasting PDP's on the market. You can charge it up over USB but you'll get faster results charging over the included power adaptor. I'm Donald Bell, and that was a first look at the Cowan 02 portable video player. [ music ]

The good: The Cowon O2 is an affordable and powerful portable media player with outstanding audio and video format support, a large touch-screen display, impressive battery life, and SDHC memory expansion.
The bad: Screen resolution is disappointing on the Cowon O2; menus lack ID3 tag sorting; DRM-protected WMA and WMV formats won't play; videos must be bookmarked manually; there's no FM radio; no video recording; and the player's all-plastic construction is thicker than we'd like.
The bottom line: The Cowon O2 isn't flashy, but it's an incredible value for a convenient way to take your video library on the go without the hassle of converting files.
