>> For a multimedia digital studio that does it all, you could do much worse than Corel Digital Studio 2010 for Windows. In fact, for families and casual users, it's pretty darn good. I'm Jessica Dolcourt with CNET, here to take a First Look. The Studio is a suite of four applications. There's the photo editor, the video editor, the DVD burner, and the video player. There's also a desktop widget that makes it easy to click around. Now, before you install the Suite, you've got to make sure that your system requirements are up to snuff, or else you won't be able to use the video tools. The photo editor, video editor, and DVD creator have a similar layout that keeps the media in focus and builds all the tools in around. The design is very visual to help you identify menu options in a glance. You'll see the gallery of images and clips in the center, with a library menu system on the left, activities along the top, and a media tray on the bottom. There are various filters for sorting the media gallery. As you hover over each menu item along the top, a range of options will pop out. You can import your media into the program, create a photo project or movie, print your creation, or share online on YouTube, Facebook, or Flickr. There's also a search bar for hunting out media quickly. If you're creating a project, sharing, or printing, you'll drag the items into the media try to begin. Editing is a big part of Corel's media suite. Double click an image or video clip to open the express editor. Starting with the photo editor, you'll see small buttons to handle rotation and commonly used tools along the top. You can go full screen or zoom in on a picture. To get at more tools, hover over the printable menu that slides out from the right. Here's where you'll find a few effects and finer adjustment tools, including brightness and blemish removers. The media bar is also lockable, allowing you to edit multiple pictures in a row. The video editor and moviemaker share similar layouts, with the addition of the timeline for videos and different tools in the "More" menu. One of Corel's strengths is in the types of projects you can create. These include cards and photo books that you can buy from Corel to movies that you can make from photos, videos, or both. Corel provides a starting point with templates. You can change the order at any time by dragging and dropping media around the project and dragging and dropping toon from the timeline. When making movies, you're also able to add a voiceover and a soundtrack. In addition to video and photo, Corel DVD factory lets you burn your music to an MP3 or audio disc. You'll also be able to copy media and projects to external devices like your cell phone, Sony PSP, or an external hard drive. The final program in the Suite, Corel WinDVD, is the quintessential video player that has a few more advance surprises besides. A tool menu lets you tweak audio and video details when you play DVDs and other video. Other favorite features include recording from a playing video or capturing a still shot of the screen. In addition, the app will bookmark a certain spot on a video so that you can easily return right to that place. The biggest downside is that it won't support Blu-ray. For that, you'll need to upgrade to the pro version, which costs about $99.00. Corel Digital Studio 2010 users will get an upgrade price of 20 percent off, or about $80.00 before taxes. Yet somehow, that doesn't sound like much of a deal. There's a lot more inside the studio, but we're running out of time. We will say that the Suite strikes a really good balance between making the many tools accessible for the average user and including enough tools to keep their projects interesting and to keep the activity options useful. We do have some quibbles, including sometimes laggy performance and we'd also like to see more than four photo effects, and a greater number of backgrounds while creating photo projects. For more details, including a list of supported media, check out the full review on reviews.cnet.com. The Suite costs $99.99, but you can try it out for free from download.com. I'm Jessica Dolcourt, and you've been looking at Corel Digital Studio, 2010. ^M00:04:03 [ Music ]

Corel Digital Studio 2010 Review
The good: Consistent user interface promotes uninterrupted work flow; canned project templates jazz up slideshows and movies; includes a printing service for calendars and cards.
The bad: Software speed is mixed, depending on hardware; photo editor is short on effects; our tests showed problems uploading to Flickr; WinDVD 2010 software does not support Blu-ray.
The bottom line: A majority of home users will appreciate Corel Digital Studio's feature set, its interactive projects, and wide support for photo and video formats.
