CES 2008 Vaporware Video Transcript

Welcome to CNET Top 5, where each time we meet, we count down another precious CNET list. I'm Tom Merritt. Every year, we CNET folk cover the Consumer Electronics Show aka CES. We are dazzled by acres of crazy new gadgets. And with Jobsian talent, manufacturers lead us to adore products that subsequently vanish from our minds and never arrive on store shelves. In other words, vaporware. Lest we forget, let's count down the Top 5 vaporware products from last year's CES. At No. 5, Neosonik. The folks at Neosonik were nice enough to let Brian Tong into their fancy suite and marvel at surround sound speakers that didn't need those annoying wires. After CES, the speakers themselves apparently went the way of the wires. I guess they were also product-less speakers. Coming in at No. 4, the Echostar TR50. This rated high with our home theater crew. It was essentially like a TiVo, but for over the air high-definition broadcasts and unlike TiVo, no subscription fee. Only the TR40, a model without the DVR, seems to have hit the shelves. Up to No. 3, Qualcomm's Soundabout Bluetooth audio. I gotta admit, this one smelled vapor-y right from the start. It was supposed to replace stereo Bluetooth's A2DP standard for wireless stereo. It didn't. Sliding in at No. 2, The Alienware Curved Display. Now the good folks at Alienware bent over backward to make sure we knew this was just a display model. But they did say they hoped it would arrive in the second half of 2008. Still waiting! And I WANT this! Before we get to No. 1, a quick look at some of the top CES announcements that did arrive. I loved those wireless nunchuck's. And you can still buy them, Nintendo hasn't killed them yet. All right. Let's get to our No. 1. The most hoped for product at CES 2008 that has not arrived...at least not yet. At No. 1, It's... 3DV Systems ZCam. I mean, look at it. The ultimate game controller. Why *wouldn't* you want to play your games with just your hands. Well maybe not all games, but this is like the Wiimote on steroids. And it's just a little camera. Have you seen it? 'Cause I haven't, and I would like to. Come on 3DV, there's still hope for 2009, right!!? Well That's it for this edition of CNET Top 5. Be sure to catch all the products from CES 2009, vaporous or otherwise, at CES.cnet.com. I'm Tom Merritt. See you next time.

Loaded: Microsoft just won't quit

We haven't heard the last of the Microsoft and Yahoo tango. AT&T breaks up with Dish Network. Blockbuster ditches Circuit City. Plus, another band releases music straight to Rock Band, skipping State Fair fate!

Ep. 143: The Sit On It Episode

This week's episode is inspired by Natali's incredibly appropriate (if not unintended) comment from last week's episode. Really, if you haven't heard it, check it out. Then listen to today's show where we discuss a wide array of chairs on which to sit. That's right, chairs are the "it". Why, what were you thinking?

Have you ever seen 3 cowboys and a mariachi playing reggae and then going back to their country roots? If you haven't make sure to see this one! "Lonely" by "function x2ds": "Lonely was I standing waiting at your door/ Lonely was I thinking of my happy days with you/ Waiting and waiting for your call that never came, that never came/ Lonely was I standing waiting for the bus/ Lonely was I walking in the rainy park/ Searching and searching for something that never came, that never came/ lonely and lonely was I..." Ep. 481: Where we finally get our hands on that Nook

Believe it or not, the fourth host on today's episode of CNET's The 404 Podcast is the Nook, Barnes & Noble's e-book reader with a color touch screen and Wi-Fi. The device is currently sold out and on back order throughout B&N, so it wasn't easy to obtain. We had to walk 500 miles and battle a Nazgul to get it, but the in-studio demo was worth the wait. If you haven't seen a Nook up close, you're in for a treat.

CES 2007's biggest vaporware

As we count down to the CES 2008, we look back at the coolest stuff they promised us last year and didn't deliver.

At GSMA 2008, Kent German takes a look at the Sony Ericsson G700, the first cell phone we've seen with scribble technology.

Shout Out Louds: "Impossible"

An escalating drum roll opens Our Ill Wills, the sophomore album from Shout Out Louds… and rightly so. It's been a few years since the release of their first full-length record, the critically acclaimed, Howl Howl Gaff Gaff, and anticipation is great. But the band's been anything but idle. These last years have seen their passports fill up with stamps and their photo albums with snap shots from all corners of the world. They've done their own headline tours as well as being the support act of choice for bands such as The Strokes, The Magic Numbers and Kings Of Leon. Being on the road means you have plenty of time to think, to drink, to reminisce on the past. To play computer games. To miss loved ones. To get lost in new towns. To misbehave and to get your priorities in order. It's all there, on Our Ill Wills, out September 11th on Merge Records. Well, maybe not the computer games so much.
