>> Hi, I'm Will Greenwald, assistant editor at cnet.com, and this is the Canon PowerShot A650 IS digital camera. This beefy camera is a 12-megapixel shooter, and as you can see it's pretty large and chunky. It's not going to be winning any beauty contests, but the amount of features they pack into this camera pretty much makes up for its lack of aesthetics and portability. This weighs over three-quarters of a pound, and obviously you're not going to be fitting this into your jacket pocket any time soon. It's most distinctive feature is its fold-out LCD screen. This 2-and-a-half inch screen pivots and folds so you can pretty much shoot at almost any direction. It also has a 6X lens with optical image stabilization, which helps reduce image shake if you try to zoom in really close and your hands are a little bit jittery. The lens can use an adapter so you can purchase an additional telephoto adapter to give it even more power, or you can get a wide angle adapter to get a wider shot. It has full menu exposure controls. Program mode, aperture priority, shutter priority, and full manual mode, which gives you a lot of flexibility when trying to shoot in different sorts of lighting, with shooting different subjects. And it pretty much just keeps you in control if you want it. There's manual focus, which is another handy feature if you want to get the shot just right and don't really trust the automatic setting to do it. Now the photos that come outlook great. 12-megapixels, surprisingly clear and sharp. They get a little noisy if you get to higher ISO settings, but in general they're going to look good. Unfortunately they're also slow to make. Even with the on-board flash turned off this camera takes over 3 seconds to process each photo because it's processing 12 megapixels instead of 8 megapixels, 6 megapixels, or even 10 megapixels of other cameras. Besides that, though, if you don't mind the weight the Canon PowerShot A650 IS offers a lot of flexibility, it's a -- very good looking photos in a chunky but simple package. Canon PowerShot A650 IS Review
The good: Great picture quality; manual exposure controls; flip-out screen.
The bad: Sluggish performance; heavy and bulky; can't use a neck strap.
The bottom line: Performance issues aside, the Canon PowerShot A650 IS combines large, good-looking photos and a generous feature set into a fine midrange shooter.
