>> Hi. I'm Lori Grunin, senior editor with CNET Reviews and this is the Canon EOS 50D. This is the followup to the 40D. The 40D remains in Canon's line albeit at a much lower price point. The body remains relatively unchanged from the 40D. There's only a few kind of cosmetic differences, mode dial silver instead of black and they squashed over the buttons down here to make room for the function button. The change isn't quite as cosmetic as I'd like. Why? Canon reduced the number of custom setting slots from 3 to 2 in order to make room for its new Creative Auto mode. Creative Auto is kind of a dumbed down program mode where for instance instead of changing the actual aperture setting, it says blurrier. Canon also increased the resolution from 10 mega pixels to 14.7 mega pixels. I like extra resolution. I need it because I crop in closely, however, we're getting to the point where in order to do that, you need a really good lens in order to resolve sharply on that sensor and the kit lenses aren't that great for getting a really sharp photo. Another interesting change is Canon bumped up the highest ISO this camera can do to ISO 12,800. The performance is definitely better than the 40D from most things, probably just not burst shooting. Because it keeps basically the same body as the 40D, it's still very comfortable to shoot with, with a very comfortable grip. It's a very good camera but quite possibly not the must-have upgrade that a lot of 40D users were looking for. It doesn't have a video mode like the D90 does and if you don't need the extra resolution or the faster performance then you might as well keep your 40D. I'm Lori Grunin and this is the Canon EOS 50D. [ Music ]

Canon's HV20 camcorder is a great choice for HD-happy amateurs, but its low-light performance could have been better.

Canon EOS 5D

The EOS 5D sounds like the annual to-die-for Canon dSLR.

Canon DC100

A basic, inexpensive DVD camcorder, the Canon DC100 is a safe, if unremarkable, choice.

Canon Optura S1

A decent pocket camcorder that's also a makeshift snapshot camera, the Canon Optura S1 is not an optimal choice for indoor shooting.

Canon Optura 300

The slick, compact Optura 300 is an excellent choice for picky shooters who want a solid vacation camcorder without the excess baggage.

Canon Elura 80

Compact and full-featured, the relatively inexpensive Elura 80 is an excellent choice if you don't shoot often in low-light situations.

Canon Elura 90

A winner when it comes to size, price, and quality, the Canon Elura 90 is an excellent choice if you're looking for a compact MiniDV camera and don't mind occasionally fumbling with awkward controls.

Canon Pixma MP460

The Canon Pixma MP460 is a minor update to the MP450. We still like its print quality, but we're disappointed by its scans. Still, it's one of our top choices for a photocentric budget all-in-one.

Canon Vixia HV30

The Canon Vixia HV30, an extremely minor upgrade from the HV20, remains a quality HDV camcorder with a couple of performance issues.

Canon EOS Rebel T1i

Canon's newest Rebel delivers video capture at the lowest dSLR price yet.

Canon EOS 50D (body only) Review

The good: Excellent performance and photo quality; solid, comfortable shooting design.

The bad: Relatively basic feature set for its class.

The bottom line: A very good midrange dSLR, the Canon EOS 50D is a compelling--but not necessarily a must-have--choice for Canon upgraders.
