>> I'm John Falcone, senior editor at cnet.com, and this is the Cambridge Soundworks Newton Theater MC155. This is a five point one surround sound speaker system, and it's got a few tricks up its sleeve that we haven't seen in some competing models. Starting off you have a nice ten inch powered sub-woofer with both line level and speaker level inputs, and that gives exactly the sort of heavy base you want to anchor a system like this. The three rectangular front speakers have a two way mid-range tweeter mid-range drive design. But it's the two surround speakers that have some interesting design tweaks to them. They are rounded in design, and actually have two drivers in a unique configuration. More importantly, they have this dipole bipole switch on the bottom, which lets the user configure exactly how they want these speakers to radiate out. So depending where you're placing them in the room, either directly to the side of the listening position or a little bit behind, you can adjust which mode you want to give the optimal sound quality for your listening environment. And while we wouldn't call these speakers tiny, they are small enough and light enough that you can mount them on the wall in a variety of configurations. As far as the actual performance, we found the system to deliver a rich and very tonally balanced sound. If we had one complaint, it just was that for a speaker system of this price, felt like the design and the plastic housing of the speakers felt a little cheap for what you were paying. That being said, we thought the overall very good sound quality more than made up for the small gripes we had about the housings.
