>> Hello this is Dong Ngo for CNET.com and today, we take a look at probably the smallest network storage device ever made. But before that let's have a quick review of how small or not so small other NAS devices are. We have a couple of them here. This one is the iOmega StorCenter. As you can see, it's big and very heavy too. So in the back here you could see it has two big fan and this thing will make it very noisy when it works. And then this one here is the familiar DS107 Plus from Synology that we have just reviewed. And at one point this considered the most compact NAS device. It's really nice design, but it has only one drive-bay. And then we have this two-bay NAS enclosure with the D-Link DNS-323. It has two-bay and it's still pretty compact. And now, here is our new kid on the block. This is the Buffalo LinkStation Mini. It's really truly small, but don't let its size fool you. This device offer 1 Terabyte of storage, about the same if not more than most NAS devices. The reason to it being small is all of the other one that use regular hard drive that is found in desktop computer, this one here use laptop hard drive. This little box here contains two of them, 500 Gigabyte each. And on the back here you will find the Gigabit Ethernet, the USB port presumably for extra external storage and the On Off switch. And this one does not have any fan, so it's guaranteed it gonna work very silently. It also offers some high-end feature for storage device including the well [inaudible] RAID 0 and 1 configurations. All in all, the LinkStation seem great except for its price. At 699 and 17 ounces the LinkStation Mini would by far top the charts of dollar per ounce cost. Once again, my name is Dong Ngo and this has been the First Look at the Buffalo LinkStation Mini. ^M00:02:05 [ Music ]

Buffalo LinkStation Mini (1TB, black) Review

The good: Small footprint and near silent operation; dual drives offer data redundancy; USB port allows for easy expansion or print sharing; DLNA support for streaming media files over your network.

The bad: Pricey per gigabyte; remote access feature took some work to enable.

The bottom line: The tiniest of NAS drives, the Buffalo LinkStation Mini keeps up with its full-size competition in terms of both features and performance. However, you'll pay a premium price for this small, silent networked drive.
