Breville misses the mark with this disappointing slow cooker Video Transcript
Hi, everyone. I'm Megan Wollerton for CNET Appliances, and this is the Breville Slow Cooker with EasySear. The first thing I noticed about this slow cooker was its design. I really love it. It's minimal. It's sleek. It looks a lot nicer and more high-end than pretty much any other slow cooker I've ever seen. So, I kind of had high expectations for it, but ultimately, it really lacks a lot of the features that I think make a slow cooker great. It doesn't have a warm mode, it doesn't have a timer. Basically, you're left to your own devices which is defeating the purpose of the slow cooker. So, let's take a look at the display. It has off, low, high, and dual. Basically, dual starts on high mode and it moves to low mode after 2 hours. I'm not exactly sure why you need that. So, it kind of seems superfluous especially when you could use that space for a warm mode or a timer. See and that's the thing, there's not even a timer on this so there's no way to say, "I wanna cook this on low for 6 hours," you just have to come and switch it off yourself. And that's the other thing, if you have a recipe that does say, cook this on low for 6 hours, this Breville is going to overcook your food. It tends to cook faster than other slow cookers and to me that's kind of a problem because you want them to be reliable, you want them to be predictable, you want to be able to say the recipe says cook on high for this longer, on low for this long, but this one really doesn't. You're gonna end up with something that's overcooked. You're gonna have to do a lot of tweaking with this Breville. This Breville Slow Cooker is $129.99, which is double the price of the Hamilton Beach one I reviewed, but half the performance. I think Breville probably tried to be a little too cool with this slow cooker and forgot a lot of the basics that makes slow cookers great to begin with. Thanks for watching. Though it pulls through in performance and connectivity, the Sony Ericsson Z600 misses the mark in features and design.
The Pantech Matrix Pro is a decent Windows Mobile smartphone, but its clunky design and lack of Wi-Fi are disappointing.
Though the lack of some features is disappointing, the HTC Droid Incredible 2 is a solid choice for Verizon customers looking for a world phone.
The Samsung SyncMaster P2770FH's disappointing performance and lack of features make it a distant choice among 27-inchers.
The Logitech Driving Force is a wireless steering wheel for the PS3 that is designed to sit right on your lap. While the wheel is convenient for use, some may be disappointed with its lack of sturdiness.
The Samsung Juke SCH-U740 is a very stylish phone that will turn heads when you're out on the town, but its lack of features is ultimately disappointing.
The Nokia E90 Communicator has a feature set as large as its size, satisfying the needs of business users. That said, we're disappointed by the lack of 3G.
Breville Slow Cooker with EasySear Review
The good: The Breville Slow Cooker with EasySear is a good looking appliance. You can put the inner pot on your stovetop for efficient searing and sautéing.
The bad: There's no timer or warm mode, so you have to be home to shut it off manually (otherwise, it will just continue to cook). It cooks much faster than most slow cookers -- you will have to adjust your cooking time way down from the recipe suggestion.
The bottom line: This $129 Breville slow cooker is more high maintenance than we'd like. If you want something that more reliably sticks to the expected cook time and traditional slow cooker features, consider another model.
