>> [inaudible] sneaking up on you, so are the Diesels, and here's more proof. BMW 335d, inline 3-litre, six-cylinder diesel using variable twin turbos. One little guy that spins up at the bottom, and another one optimized at the higher RPM. They hand off to each other to get rid of the turbo lag. Now the diesel thing's the real magic here, 25% improvement in fuel economy. Super clean because they've got a whole bunch of scrubbers and catalysts in there, plus they use urea injection downstream in the exhaust to finally catalyze out the remaining nitrous oxides that are such a bedeviling factor traditionally on diesel emissions. How about performance though? 265 horsepower, eh-heh. 425 foot-pounds. Now I've got your attention. This thing's a madman off the line. 'Course the rpm indicator's interesting. The tach redlines around 5,000. Not used to that in a BMW, but diesels are all about low RPM torque. The off the line numbers are 0 to 60 in about 6.2 on the 335d. There's also gonna be an X5 with the exact same motor. It'll do 0 to 60 in about 7.2. No slouch. And by the way, the torque numbers on this car are about the same as on BMW's highly regarded V12. That's a very stark comparison. So these cars are real. They're coming. That'll be mid '08. Two new diesel cars using one power plant from BMW. ^E00:01:30 [ Music ]
