>> BMW tried a hatchback in the U.S. market before. The much malign little 318 TI that left in 1999 and nobody really missed it. But now 10 years later, they're back for much potential abuse in the hatchback-hating USA. Here's the five series GT. Notice the hatch; it's a two-piece affair opening either like a stubby trunk lid or a full hatch lid. The overall lines are somewhat like a Lexus GS although that car is not a hatch. So I guess BMW did their homework. They say this vehicle has the rear seat leg room of a seven series, the head room of an X5. The front seats are slightly elevated like a crossover for a good view, panoramic glass on the roof if optional as are twin rear reclining seats; and of course dual rear video screens available as well. Power will come from BMW engines we know well, a twin turbo six or a twin turbo V8 under the hood all using an eight-speed automatic.
