>> Hey, I'm Donald Bell, Senior Editor for Digital Audio and MP3 and today we're taking a First Look at the Belkin GoStudio. The Belkin GoStudio is a recording accessory made for the iPod. It retails around $120. Now, we've seen voice recorders for the iPod before, but the GoStudio does much more than voice recording and it's really aimed at amateur musicians and podcasters. People who wanna make above average recordings of interviews and lectures. Like most standard and portable audio recorders, the GoStudio includes gain control settings, headphone volumes and switches for a built-in low cut filter and audio limiter. A source input switch on the side here lets you choose between recording through the built-in stereo microphones, the 3.5 millimeter input or the combination jacks on the back. Operating the GoStudio is very simple and you use your iPod to start and stop recording and the files are saved as either 44 or 22 kilohertz WAV files, which we played back immediately from your iPod over either headphones, the GoStudio's built-in speaker. Getting the files off the iPod and on to your computer still requires you carrying around an iPod cable, which can be a pain to locate in a pinch. Including a pass-through USB plug would have made file transfers much easier. The GoStudio's recording quality is pretty good for the price especially if you're using the combo jacks. We weren't thrilled with the built-in microphones, however, we've picked up a lot of noise from handling, as well as interference from cell phones and even the iPods on hard drives spin. If you're looking for a budget recorder with great built-in stereo microphones, we highly recommend the Zoom H2 over the GoStudio, which you can pick up for around $150. I'm Donald Bell, and that was a First Look at the Belkin GoStudio. ^M00:01:41 [ Music ]
The good: The Belkin GoStudio transforms your iPod into a multipurpose audio recorder, complete with stereo microphones, professional cable inputs, and CD-quality resolution.
The bad: The Belkin GoStudio has a flimsy construction, noisy microphones, and microphone inputs that lack phantom power.
The bottom line: The Belkin GoStudio is an affordable and convenient tool for capturing lectures, interviews, and music rehearsals directly to your iPod. If quality matters, you'll need to forgo the iPod and spend a little extra on a standalone recorder.
