Belkin Conserve Surge Protector Video Transcript

>> David: I'm David Carnoy, Executive Editor for CNET.com and I'm going to give you a quick video tour of the Belkin Conserve Surge Protector; this is a Green surge protector and the idea behind it is pretty simple instead of having your electronics sit there in standby mode and sip a little bit of power the Conserve lets you completely shut down your components so no sipping whatsoever occurs. Two models are available, a shorter strip with a total of 8 outlets and a longer one with a total of 10 outlets. Both models have a 4 foot cord and 2 sockets that are designated as always on outlets for those products that you indeed want to keep on or leave in standby mode like your DVR. All outlets have a sliding safety switch that closes off the socket when not in use which comes in handy if you have small children. Both Conserve models also come with a light switch style remote that allows you to turn off your components with a flip of a conveniently placed switch so you don't have to bend down underneath the desk to hit an on/off button and possibly throw out your back. The mode is wall- mountable and could also control multiple Conserve protectors so you can shut everything down in your house at once. At this point you're probably wondering just how much money the Conserve can save you, well the answer is not as much as you might think. Every component is different but you have to remember that standby mode is already a very low power mode so completely shutting off the power to the unit isn't going to have a big impact. We calculated the cost savings for the average LCD or Plasma TV for the year and it came in at around 75 cents based on having your TV on for 5 hours a day and in standby mode for 19. True the more components you have hooked up the more you'll save and some items like paper-shredders and printers potentially suck more energy in standby mode than home-theater components. All in all, however, the Conserve is a good concept and good for the environment in its own small way. You may pay a bit of a premium for the extra Conserve feature but you should make up that dough over the course of a couple of years of usage. I'm David Carnoy and that's the Belkin Conserve Surge Protector, thanks for watching. ^M00:02:12

Belkin Conserve Surge Protector (10-outlet) Review

The good: The Belkin Conserve surge protector allows you to completely shut down most of your components to save on energy costs while keeping two outlets reserved for electronics you want to keep "always on"; surge protection for cable/satellite RF lines; sliding safety covers for outlets; wireless remote included for power on/off.

The bad: No socket for Powerline network adapters; no phone line or network protection.

The bottom line: Belkin's Conserve surge protector probably won't save you a ton of money, but it does provide a convenient way to selectively shut off any power-sucking devices in your home.
