>>Seth Rosenblatt: Hi, I'm Seth Rosenblatt for CNET Download.com and today we're taking a first at Avira AntiVir 10, one of the highest rated free security programs according to third party testers and one of the most popular according to Download.com users. The latest version of Avira doesn't really push the envelope, it just sort of maintains the status quo. Except for minor cosmetic changes, the apps interface is unchanged from version 8. There are new tool bar icons, a refreshed skin and that's about it. AntiVir opens to the status menu with last scan, last definition file update and real time guard statuses. Events logs changes to the program and the Reports tab keeps a history of threats. Information from both sections can be exported. New features are a bit thin this time around. A new generic repair mode really just takes the choice out of how Avira tells you about the threats it has discovered. In version 9 you can be informed about them in the middle of a scan or at the end, however, now only the later is available. Windows 7 users now can run a scan as administrator directly from the interface, which is a smart, yet minor fix. Avira's installation sequence has been revamped and now only takes users through five windows. Theoretically, this means that it's like a five click installation but new users must complete the registration form. However, its installation file on packing process appears faster and you no longer have to reboot after the install. Uninstallation can also be completed with any uninstaller that's new. Meanwhile, the pop up ad that has been plaguing users and critics for years remains unchanged. Combined with the noticeable lack of a silent gaming mode that many competitors offer, this marks one area where Avira has actually fallen behind. Still, Avira offers a lot, the program offers a wide selection of scan customization letting users fully scan both internal and external hard drives, run a preloaded scan or customize a scan. Avira includes anti-spyware protection scanning tech that can crack open locked files, improved internal security to prevent AntiVir's files from being maliciously altered and one click threat removal. Babysitting was taken out in the last version. With your first look at Avira AntiVir 10, I'm Seth Rosenblatt for Download.com.
