>> Hi I'm Dan Ackerman, senior editor at CNET.com. And this is the Averitech [assumed spelling] 2371. Now this is a fairly standard looking ultra portable laptop, kind of like pretty much any other ultra portable you've seen. The problem with these super small twelve inch laptops is they're usually very expensive. This guy however, manages to come in at well under a thousand dollars, making it one of the most affordable ultra portable laptops that we've seen. Now how do they shave a couple of bucks off the price? Well first of all this guy uses an AMD CPU, not the latest core two duo Intel chips, and definitely not the Santa Rosa Centrino duo upgrade that Intel rolled out this spring. So it's not gonna be the fastest laptop on the blocks, but for web surfing, working with web documents, basic productivity, it's gonna be more than enough. Now you're not gonna find a lot of the fancy extras you'd see in more expensive laptops like a webcam or touch sensitive controls. But you do have all the basics of USB ports and mini firewire, a DVD burner. What you do have is this one little button here marked S, and you press that, and it actually goes into a super low power mode that slows down the CPU, and that's gonna save you some battery life. Now Veritech isn't really a household name in laptops, but this is a pretty solidly built system that can handle pretty much anything you throw at it. It does have one kinda unique design feature, it is a very dark, pearlized brown, even though it kind of looks black, and that's sort of unique. [ background music ] It may not be what I would choose, but it's certainly something different than the usual blacks and grays. I am Dan Ackerman, and that is the Averitech 2371. ^M00:01:35 [ music ]

Alienware Sentia

The Sentia's decent set of features can't make up for its subpar performance and high price; we recommend looking at a different thin-and-light laptop.

Helio Fin

The Helio Fin is perhaps too thin for its own good, with several design compromises that place slimness over usability. If you can look past these flaws, however, the Fin is a feature-packed phone with excellent performance.

Averatec 2371 Review

Editors' rating

The good: Reasonably priced; attractive dark brown finish; includes ExpressCard slot and FireWire port; excellent manual.

The bad: Underpowered AMD CPU paired with only 1GB of RAM limits performance; unimpressive battery life; not customizable.

The bottom line: For less than $1,000, the Averatec 2371 is an excellent value ultraportable for those who can look past its acceptable but subpar performance.
