>> Hi, I'm Bonnie Cha, Senior editor at CNET.com and today we're taking a First Look at the Asus R700t. And now you might know Asus is more for its computer components or its Eee PC, but their branching out to other consumer electronics including GPS. And for its first debut, it's not too bad actually. It has this really nice design. It's got a 4.3-inch screen on the front, so it's nice and spacious. And it's really slim, which is amazing considering that it's packed with features, including a built-in traffic receiver and you get a life time traffic subscription, so that's really great. As far as features, it's got voice-guided directions and text-guided directions as well. And you'll also get 3D building rendering, so that's pretty cool. I haven't really seen that in too many devices. It's also got Bluetooth, as well as multimedia capabilities. The one thing I'm really, really disappointed is that it doesn't have text-to-speech functionality, so you're not gonna hear, you know, street names. For such a high-end device, I'm really, kind of puzzled why it wasn't included. Directions are pretty good, the route calculations, somewhat a little more inefficient, so that's one thing to be aware of. Overall, a decent device, but I would say, I'm gonna wait maybe until the next version for text-to-speech functionality. It's available now though for $325. I'm Bonnie Cha and this has been your First Look of the Asus R700t. ^M00:01:19 [ Music ]
The Mio DigiWalker C230 portable navigation system offers text-to-speech functionality and an affordable price tag. Its screen is much improved over its predecessor's.
The TomTom Ease features a greatly simplified menu structure and an entry-level price, but still manages to pack in advanced features such as text-to-speech.
Amazon gives in to the Authors Guild over the Kindle's text-to-speech feature, Skype has a new option for cheap overseas calls, and how a cell phone ends up in a bag of chips or a fish's belly.
With its solid-state memory, the JVC KW-NX7000 features quick GPS navigation with text-to-speech capabilities. DVD/DIVX video playback and digital audio playback from USB, CD, or SD card round out a solid centerpiece to the budding car audio installation.
The Asus VG278H has great 3D performance, a fast fresh rate, but is just a bit too expensive for what it offers.
Asus practically invented the Netbook market, and the Eee PC 1000HE is an overdue overhaul that offers a new CPU and great battery life.
The Asus P527 Windows Mobile smartphone may offer a ton of features and an attractive design but that's all canceled out by its frustratingly slow performance.
The Garmin Nuvi 880 offers an impressive feature list and solid performance, but it's the accurate speech recognition that really pushes it over the edge and makes it our top GPS gift choice for this year's Holiday Gift Guide.
It's great to see more touch-screen Windows 8 laptops under $600, but note that the Asus X202E requires some compromises in performance and battery life.
As a navigation system and multimedia receiver, the Eclipse AVN6600 offers an impressive range of features, although its usability is hampered by some quirky design flaws.
Asus R700t Review
The good: The Asus R700t portable navigation system features a slim design and has an integrated traffic receiver. You also get a complimentary subscription to the traffic services, integrated Bluetooth, and 3D building renderings.
The bad: The R700t doesn't include text-to-speech functionality, route recalculations weren't always efficient, and general performance can be slow at times.
The bottom line: For the company's first stab at the GPS market, the Asus R700t is an impressive debut, offering some great navigation features. However, we'd like to see the addition of text-to-speech functionality and smoother performance before completely committing to it.
