Despite its limited capacity, the Archos 405 portable video player is an amazing value.
The attractively priced Archos 404 is a PVP in an MP3 player's body.
The Dell Studio XPS 435 successfully overcomes our bias against desktops that claim to be experts at everything through charming case design and a strong configuration at a relatively fair price. It misses greatness because of a handful of minor missteps, but if you need a do-it-all mainstream tower system, this Dell more or less covers all the bases.
BOL 1070: Windows 7 cuddle party
Microsoft shows "Pink" (sort of); MMS disaster, er, feature about to launch on iPhone; Wii gets a price cut; Archos' new Windows 7 tablet looks great--too bad nobody will notice; and MIT has a synthetic eyeball on the way that amazes us. Oh yeah...and about that cuddle party...
The Motorola Rokr E1 takes a step toward integrating a usable audio jukebox into a functional cell phone, but the 100-song limit and the slow processor performance will disappoint iPod users looking to carry a single do-it-all device.
It shoots good photos, but mediocre performance and a serious design flaw may keep this 8-megapixel camera out of the hands of enthusiasts.
IntelliTouch EOS Digital Wireless Multi-Room Audio System
The IntelliTouch EOS Digital Wireless Multi-Room Audio System is a reasonable choice for wireless iPod audio, if you can get past the system's occasionally shoddy range performance and overall mediocre sound quality.
We can forgive Gateway for cramming the DX4200 with more memory than it needs simply because its specs and overall performance are the best in its price class. Of the various do-it-all lower midrange PCs out there, this one gets our nod.
The $799 ZT Affinity 7334Ma's stellar performance benchmarks, Blu-ray drive, and plenty of room for expansion give it a step up from the competition. ZT still needs help in the external design department, but this system certainly earns our recommendation as a workhorse do-it-all system.
The A730's screen and camera are nice, but its mediocre performance and lack of Wi-Fi make it hard to justify the price.
Archos 604 (30GB) Review
The good: The Archos 604 has an excellent base price with a decent choice of accessory options; sharp and vibrant display; can record audio and video with the optional kit; has a removable battery, a built-in speaker, and a built-in kickstand; nice tactile controls and well-designed interface; can view photos and listen to music simultaneously; compatible with subscription services; it's durable and compact for its screen size; excellent photo viewer.
The bad: The Archos 604 is limited to 30GB; must purchase separate kit to record audio/video; must purchase separate kit to get a power adapter; must download plug-ins for certain types of video files; weak bundled accessories; proprietary USB cable; not easy to operate blindly.
The bottom line: The do-it-all Archos 604 with its improved design and a low base price is an amazing PVP. Just make sure to figure in the cost of some essential extras.
