Apple LED Cinema Display 27-inch Video Transcript
Hey everyone. This is Eric Franklin from CNET.com and today we're taking a first look at the Apple LED Cinema Display 27 inch. Design wise, the 27-inch is, for all intents and purposes, a larger version of the 24-inch LED Cinema Display the company released in 2008, with a few changes. Those changes include an obviously larger screen, a much higher 2560 X 1440 resolution, and an ambient light sensor. Other extras found on the 24-inch model are retained here including a built-in camera, a built-in mic, built-in 2.1 speakers, and 3 USB ports located on the back. The panel's about the same width as a Dell UltraSharp U2711, although it is much thinner in depth. The display has a 10-degree back tilt but no other ergonomic options. The foot stand is flat and wide and, along with its hefty weight, does a good job of keeping the monitor stable when knocked from the sides. In movies, the display demonstrated an impressively low black level and accurate colors and we were able to easily see dark detail in dark scenes. In games, we saw vibrant color that really took advantage of the display's glossy film coating. We did see some evidence of ghosting in one of our synthetic DisplayMate tests when running through Windows but we were unable to repeat this anywhere else. The 27-inch Apple LED Cinema Display is an incredible performer, not just in games and movies, but thanks to its glossy screen coating, images have a smooth and fine look we've rarely seen before so it looks great when running everyday tasks as well. Still, this is a $1000 display that is only compatible with Macs because after late 2008, it does not natively work on a PC. Check out our full review to see if this monitor is right for you. Apple LED Cinema Display (27-inch, 2010) Review
The good: The Apple LED Cinema Display's high resolution and screen coating gives it not only great performance in movies and games, but also in everyday tasks. The monitor works seamlessly when connected to a recent model MacBook, and provides a charging station and three USB ports. And it just looks really slick on a desktop.
The bad: Thanks to Apple's decision to only include a Mini DisplayPort connection, the LED Cinema Display can only be used with Macs from late 2008 and on. Also, the display lacks ergonomic features and more-granular customization options. Some users will not appreciate the overly reflective and glossy screen.
The bottom line: As a desktop display and USB extender, the 27-inch Apple LED Cinema Display works wonderfully; however, for $1,000, there are better monitors that offer more options, including PC and Mac compatibility.
