>> Hey I'm Donald Bell, Senior Editor for Digital Audio and MP3. Today we're getting a First Look at the new Apple iPod Nano 4G. And so this is a return to the longer, slimmer shape of the iPod Nano. the original iPod Nano. It's the thinnest iPod Nano we've seen, yet. It has a rounded shape to it that no iPod Nano up until now has had even the screen itself has a rounded form, it's a rounded glass covering the screen on the iPod Nano now. The fact that they're using glass is a great thing is that rounded form will probably make this more prone to scratching. But you still have the two-inch high-resolution great color display found on the 3G iPod Nano, but now it's just in a landscape mode. The other thing is that there's now an accelerometer built-in to the iPod now, so when you turn it on the side you're greeted with the iPod cover flow mode when you're in music mode. And also if you're doing photos, photos will turn on this side. Another cool thing about the accelerometer built-in to the iPod Nano 4G is that there is a new shake to shuffle feature where if you violently shake the Nano it will shuffle to a new song in your collection. Just kind of jogging up and down won't engage the shuffle feature, so if you were worried about the shuffle triggering when you're out walking around, that's not gonna happen. You have to really shake it pretty hard in order to get that shuffle feature. Other neat features on the iPod Nano 4G is that they built-in the Genius Playlist feature that's now on iTunes 8, on the iPod Touch, you now have it on the Apple iPod Nano 4G. So when you're listening to a song you can select it and you can instantly create a playlist of 25 songs that the Apple thinks will sound like the song that you picked. Another neat feature that is brand new to the iPhone line up is the fact that if you plug in a compatible iPod headset, you can now enable a voice recording feature, a voice recording application that's built in to the iPod Nano. So the Nano 4G is available in 9 different colors, more colors than we've ever seen in Nano or any iPod and it is available at the same price point as previous generation, $149 and $199, but instead of that being 4 and 8 gigabytes is now $149 for 8-gigabyte and 199 for 16-gigabyte capacities. The good: The fourth-generation iPod Nano is more attractive and colorful than its predecessor and includes Apple's new Genius playlist tool, a tilt sensor, and accessibility features for the visually impaired.

The bad: To use the new Nano, you must upgrade to Apple's iTunes 8 software with its laundry list of hardware requirements; the rounded screen invites glare; sound quality is only average.

The bottom line: The fourth-generation iPod Nano is easy on the eyes and the wallet, and you can't beat its hardware and user interface design. Just be sure to give iTunes 8 a spin before committing.
