The impenetrable Maxtor Black Armor is the Fort Knox of external hard drives, but the added security comes at a hefty price tag. This device might appeal to those who need the most protection possible, but the competition offers more space for less money.
The LaCie 2Big dual is a rugged and heavy external hard drive that's well-designed and offers a flexible and secure storage solution.
If the Shuttle XPC X100 had come out when it was announced six months ago, we'd like it a lot better. Competing systems such as the WinBook Jiv Mini pack more features into a smaller package, but the trade-off is less RAM and hard-drive space.

We're impressed by the Lenovo ThinkPad USB Secure Hard Drive's burly security features and rigorous performance results, but the bloated price tag prevents us from recommending it to anyone other than business consumers. The no-frills Series II external hard drives are good for auxiliary storage or backup, but they aren't the best deal around.
Aluratek Tornado Plus (250GB) Review
The good: Swappable plug-and-play design.
The bad: High cost per gigabyte; slow transfer speeds; RFID-security key is easy to lose; flimsy external casing; no telephone support.
The bottom line: The Aluratek Tornado external hard drive is a RFID-secured hard-drive enclosure that doesn't have the performance or the innovation to warrant its expensive price tag. We don't recommend the poorly designed Tornado since the competition offers more storage space and a higher level of security at less cost.
