>> Hi, I'm David Carnoy, executive editor for CNET.com and this is the Altec Lansing InMotion iMV 712. This is an iPod speaker system with a twist and the twist is the fact that it has an eight point five inch LCD in the middle of the speaker system. This is part of a new breed of iPod mini AV systems that are geared towards both doing iPod audio and iPod video. It is a pretty stylish system and it is a little bit bigger than your average tabletop iPod speaker system and the sound is pretty good. It's not awesome but the system does play loud and there's a decent amount of bass so overall we were pretty pleased with the sound quality. The screen isn't the most stellar screen we've seen. It's pretty much your basic portable DVD player screen. But if you sit a few feet back, the picture does look fairly good. Just to be clear, this system isn't portable. It's designed for the home and has to be plugged in. A lot of these iPod speaker systems have a built in AM FM radio. This one does not. However, it does have a fair amount of connectivity. For example, you can output your video to a TV via the S video output on the back. You can also, it has a video input which also allows you to play video on the screen from say a portable DVD player. I don't know why you would, but it does have that. The system comes with a small remote control that offers a decent amount of functionality. However, the one thing you'll notice is that the iPod menu system does not appear on the LCD screen. You have to still navigate menus by looking at the iPod screen. I'm David Carnoy and that's the Altec Lansing InMotion iMV 712. ^M00:01:50 [ Music ]

The good: The Altec Lansing inMotion iMV712 mini home theater system features a built-in 8.5-inch LCD screen for viewing iPod videos; sound quality is quite decent in small rooms and the system plays loud; connectivity options include a line-in jack, a composite AV input, and an S-Video output for showing videos on an even larger display.
The bad: Fairly pricey; limited aspect ratio control; screen size still too small to be seen from a distance; strains to fill larger rooms with sound; the logos on the face are little too big and distracting; no AM/FM radio.
The bottom line: While it's hard to say where Altec Lansing's iMV712 mini home theater for the iPod fits into the home, it does up the ante for iPod speaker systems.
