>> Hey, I'm Donald Bell, Senior Editor for Digital, Audio, and MP3, and today we're taking a First Look at the Altec Lansing Inmotion Classic. This is a portable speaker system that's both iPod and iPhone compatible and comes with the retail price of $149.00 or around $130.00 street. The first thing you'll notice here is that in spite of its name, there's nothing at all classic about this speaker. It's a very modern looking, angular design with a black metal grille taking up most of the front with a little LCD up in the corner here. There's silver plastic around the edges, with these nice, big buttons along the top for controlling playback, volume, and choosing the audio source. On the back, you have a retractable antenna for the built-in FM tuner, along with the power adaptor input and an aux input for running something like a CD player through this. You also notice a little slot here near the top where you can store the included remote control. The remote is surprisingly well done, repeating all the controls from the top of the speaker, along with keys for radio presets and even keys for navigating the menu on iPod. Another nice little detail here is the kickstand, which folds down, back, or up, so you can carry this around like a boombox. ^M00:01:07. [ Music ] ^M00:01:11 The kickstand is plastic, but relatively sturdy and permanently attached to the sides. Still, we don't recommend using the kickstand as a handle unless you're just listening to radio since there's nothing to prevent the iPod or iPhone from toppling out of the dock. All in all, it's a great-sounding little system, like most Altec Lansing products, but its power and sonic range make it a better solution for a kitchen or a bedroom than a family room. Fortunately, the rechargeable battery in here means you can easily take this anywhere you want to go and get about five hours worth of music. The good: The inMotion Classic is an iPod- and iPhone-compatible speaker with an attractive design, FM radio, remote control, and a powerful sound that defies its compact size.
The bad: Station presets can only be managed with the remote control; the dock doesn't secure the iPod while the speaker is being carried; and there's no AM radio or Bluetooth.
The bottom line: The Altec Lansing inMotion Classic offers a stylish way play your iPod or iPhone around your home. It sounds remarkable for its size, but it lacks the low-end oomph of a larger system.
