The Album Leaf:
Created: 07/19/2005
Video description: Jimmy LaValle, perhaps known best for his work in the contemplative dream-rock outfit Tristeza and San Diego's The Black Heart Procession, began releasing delicate, progressive instrumental work as The Album Leaf in 1999(the name comes from a Chopin piece). After years of labor-intensive touring and tinkering with complex tracks in his cramped bedroom studio, LaValle was repeatedly offered a rare invite from Icelandic phenoms Sigur Ros and Mum to record his newest solo opus in their Mosfellsbaer studio. He finally accepted and flew overseas to compose and record "In A Safe Place." With the addition of vocals (absent from previous Album Leaf releases) from The Black Heart Procession's Pall Jenkins, Sigur Ros' Jon Thor Birgisson, and LaValle himself, the songs on the new record are chillingly delicate and more pop-based than ever before. "In A Safe Place" masterfully negotiates the spaces between minimal electronica and neo-instrument rock.

Morrissey: "You Have Killed Me"

Ringleader of the Tormentors is a savagely alive record. Recorded at Forum Music Village in Rome with long-term hero Tony Visconti (who produced favorite records for T-Rex and David Bowie, during their most creative periods of the 60s and 70s), the album positively crackles with fire. It is, for instance, a far more direct and rocking record than Quarry, which aside from Irish Blood, English Heart, was a self-consciously beautiful, and largely symphonic, record.

Wolfmother: "Woman"

YES!!! People unite for the Wolfies have returned from the canyons of L.A with a fusion of freaked out jamming, delicate melodies and gallant rock riffage that shall be known collectively as ?Wolfmother?. Myles Heskett, Chris Ross and Andrew Stockdale are the key holders to the future of all things Wolf ? together they write all their songs while contributing drums, bass/keyboards and guitar/vocals respectively. In their lives before Wolfmother, Myles worked in graphics, Chris in things digital and Andrew was a photographer so they all shared a passion for creative expression. After years of jamming in anonymity they finally stepped out in public during early 2004, playing shows and signing to Modular Recordings. Later that year the trio released an independent EP that caused ink to be spilled and fans to be won. Then after 6 months of nonstop Australian and overseas touring it was time to start creating a vast album with a deceptively simple title. Their partner in this conception was producer D. Sardy; catalyst for the likes of Dandy Warhols, Oasis, Autolux, Jet and Helmet. Chris, Andrew and Myles decamped to L.A. in May, 2005 and rented an abandoned Hollywood recording studio called Cherokee for their rehearsal space. In its heyday Cherokee hosted sessions like Pink Floyd?s ?The Wall? but most of its equipment has since been sold or stolen. Even so, from this barren place came lush things as freeform jams evolved into fully formed songs. The themes of the album also took shape in the City Of Angels; a city that thrives on chaos presenting many lyrical possibilities to Andrew Stockdale. The complexities of living in the metropolis also helped shape the escapist imagery of ?Wolfmother? ... simple philosophies for complex times.

Prophet Omega: "The Right Thing"

Until recently, Joe Magistro was an affable, unassuming rock drummer who could often be seen manning the traps in the rock clubs of New York City. Then he underwent a startling metamorphosis into multi-tasking one-man D.I.Y. mastermind Prophet Omega, who makes an appropriately visionary entrance with his Astralwerks debut The Natural World. Recorded in makeshift home studios in a Brooklyn apartment and a rented cabin in the rustic isolation of New York's Catskill mountains, The Natural World is a one-of-a-kind magnum opus whose 13 lovingly crafted tracks combine a freewheeling sonic sensibility with abundant melodic hooks and generous doses of old-school rock and soul beats. Magistro mines an array of real and sampled instruments and a ramshackle assortment of found sounds, stitching disparate elements into seamlessly funky epics that combine over-the-top sonic inspiration with tightly constructed, lyrically thoughtful songcraft.

Amon Tobin: "Foley Room" (DVD trailer #2)

March of 2007 will see 'Foley Room' come to fruition. An expansive project which had Amon Tobin, armed with vintage recording tools of the highest caliber and a helpful crew of friends, traveling far and wide in search of as many interesting recordings as possible; wildlife, insects, machinery, kitchen utensils, musical instruments and musicians were all recorded with calculated objectivity in order to then be brought in to the studio and treated simply as raw material. This is the basis of his new album. To better explain how all this went down there will be a documentary DVD accompanying the album; here are the trailers...ENJOY!
