>> Let's face it, software users are often a fickle bunch, which is why it's more than a bit impressive to look at the download count from Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, which has surpassed 315 million downloads at the time that we're making this video. I'm Seth Rosenblatt for CNET Download.com and in this First Look video, we'll be going over the basics of Ad-Aware, a security software stalwart. In its 10th Anniversary Edition, Ad-Aware does a good job of improving functionality to remain one of the most trusted names in spyware removal. The improvements in the Anniversary Edition fall neatly into two categories: design and speed. The program is noticeably faster than the 2008 version. That's obviously a bit hard to demonstrate here, but it loads faster and completes scans in less time, definitely a change worth noting. The quick scan completed in less than 10 minutes and the proprietary real-time defender Ad-Watch Live! has been reconfigured to run more smoothly in the background. Long time users will appreciate both. The interface refinements make this the easiest to use Ad-Aware yet. Action button placement at the bottom of the pane might feel odd to those familiar with older versions, but the force continuity between Windows is a plus. A helpful box on the side tells you precisely what the scan is looking for, while links to drill down to more information are easy to see. Fans of Ad-Aware Free should keep in mind that only the paid version comes with anti-virus, heuristics and real-time registry protection. Ad-Aware Free cannot scan network drives and even a basic feature like the scheduler remains off limits to non-paying customers.
