>> Brian: What's up Prizefight fans, I'm Brian Tong and with NetBooks being all the craze we're bringing 2 of the best budget NetBooks to the Prizefight ring it's a showdown throw down between the Acer Aspire One AOD150 and the Asus EEE PC 1000HE. Our judges for this fight are Senior Editor, Dan Ackerman, Associate Editor, Julie Rivera [assumed spelling] and myself. Now we'll take all 3 judge's scores and average them out to the nearest 10th each round and the final Prizefight score will be an average of all rounds using the same decimal system. It's a 5 round face-off, Round 1; who's hot or not. The Acer Aspire One isn't the classiest looking NetBook with is duller plastic finish. Dan Ackerman called it cheap and Acer's touch-pad is cramped and the buttons are hard to use plus if you add the 6 cell battery; this thing has some major junk in the trunk. The Asus EEE PC has a glossy finish with metal accents and I like the spaced out keyboard and the touch-pad that's larger with easy to press buttons. It's 6 cell battery blends in with the machine but this guy is pretty heavy compared to the Acer. Now these aren't the prettiest of laptops but the EEE PC takes the round with a 3 point 3 and the Aspire One gets a 2 point 3. Next round is display. With NetBooks this size the display matters. Now both machines are rocking 10 inch screens with a 1024 by 600 resolution but why didn't either of them do something about their large chunky bezel? [sound effect] We're calling this even and both guys get a 3. Now after averaging 2 rounds Asus leads by half a point. The next round is performance. These NetBooks come with 1G of RAM but the processor is where you'll find the difference. The Aspire One is using the standard Intel Atom N70 which does the job just fine but the EEE PC is loaded with the newer Intel Atom N80 with the better front-side bus speed and an 8% performance boost. You may not see a huge difference but it's there Asus takes this round 4 to 3. Next round is battery life. You really need a 6 cell battery to get the most out of these machines so that's what we're using. Battery life here is some of the best with both NetBooks getting over 6 hours in our test but the Asus edges Acer by just 4 minutes and the design without the battery booty helps it here. Asus gets a perfect 5 and the Aspire gets a 4 point 7. So after averaging 4 rounds the EEE PC leads by half a point. The final round that decides it all is value. Both of these sub $400 machines are nearly identical with the same memory, same 160G hard drive, 80211 wireless connectivity and Windows XP. You can't beat the Aspire's $349 price tag even if its processor is a little slower, but for $50.00 more the EEE PC gives you a slightly better processor, a few more minutes of battery juice and a more spacious keyboard and touch-pad. Now decide for yourself which is the better value but we're giving Asus a 4 point 3 and Acer gets a 4. So let's average out all 5 rounds and in this battle the Asus EEE PC jumped out to a half point lead early and held on for the victory winning 3 point 9 to 3 point 4 and is your Prizefight winner. Now these are both great budge NetBooks but the Asus 1000HE with the latest Intel Atom processor helped give it the edge. The Acer Aspire One is easily the best of the current under-$400 Netbooks, but its meager allotment of memory and tiny battery limit its appeal.
As much as Acer's Aspire X3200 surpasses other pricier PCs with its wide array of useful inputs and outputs, you'll have a hard time choosing between it and its otherwise identical dual-core Acer linemate of the same price. If you're a multitasker on a budget, you'll likely prefer this model's triple-core CPU.
The inexpensive and lightweight Acer Aspire 3000 offers basic laptop functionality.
The unexciting yet inexpensive Acer Aspire 5000 is a decent desktop-replacement laptop for basic home and small business use.
The Aspire L310 works as a trim, affordable computer that will also serve light home-theater-PC duties. It doesn't offer as much room for improvement as its competition, but as long as you don't have plans for upgrading or running Windows Vista full bore,
For the price, it's hard to find fault with Acer's even cheaper version of the 10.1-inch Aspire One, as long as you're not expecting top-of-the-line features.
The Acer Aspire X1200-U1520A is a speedy, compact, low-end desktop that's powerful enough to serve as a light-duty home theater PC. Expansion is limited by an especially cramped interior (even for a small PC), but the total package is worthwhile for PC shoppers on a budget.
The fully equipped, multimedia-minded Acer Aspire 9500 gives pricey, entertainment-focused desktop replacements a serious run for their money.
The large, 20-inch Acer Aspire 9800 offers a decent multimedia experience, but you'd be better off buying a more portable laptop and a detached display.
With Blu-ray and a true 1080p display, the 18-inch Acer Aspire 8920 is a movie fan's dream, but we'd go for the cheaper of Acer's two preconfigured models.
