5. Photo editing software trials - hog up disk space, totally useless
4.Trial games- hog up even more disk space and are never usually fun
3. Antivirus programs- useless, slow the computer down
2. Document editor trials (such as word or Corel)- eat up a ton of disk space, force you to find converters to convert the filetypes when they expire
1. Subscription stuff- icons posted on desktop for websites that offer a trial and make you pay when the trial expires.

Crapware hogs up processor power, disk space, and is generally useless crap.

PC manufacturers should sell computers for a slightly higher price so that people do not have to delete the crap.

People should steer away from manufacturers such as Dell or Gateway in favor of small-internet based/mail order computer companies.

Excellent, but you forgot one big one.....
by wolf1296 May 8, 2007 5:44 AM PDT: I just purchased a Dell laptop and desktop in the last year. I spent almost three days cleaning all of the crapware off of it. Your article is excellent and I hope the computer companies start to catch a clue.

However, I think you missed one big one. Microsoft Windows is the biggest piece of crapware out there. Actually, I think it is the worst virus to hit the world, but it has already got a foothold and we'll never get rid of it now. When will we get a good competitor to force Microslop to produce a quality product. Apple is close, but the pressure isn't there. Linux, has a long way to go.

MyWay Search Assistant
by gp84rules May 8, 2007 4:18 PM PDT: This program came preinstalled with my dell pc. In internet explorer, when the program can't find a page, it searches it on a site called "myway". The site is useless. I don't need the search. One time, I needed to register one of my programs to use it, but when it tried to connect to the internet, the myway search popped up.

Dells now offered with Ubuntu Linux

Interestingly enough, Dell now offers computers with Ubuntu Linux preloaded instead of Windows; follow the link from http://www.dell.com/ubuntu

The Ubuntu systems will be shipping without any 'crapware' preinstalled and don't need the antivirus protection to compensate for security flaws, as in Windows.

I've been using Ubuntu for just over two years now and switched completely from XP around a year ago. Its a good OS and free; if you haven't tried Linux recently, give it a shot :); Like this Reply to this comment
