Vista + Flash + Protected Mode = CNET TV w/Choppy Video

In the last two weeks we've gotten a large number of reports of choppy video on CNET TV. The symptoms were so odd that I had to reproduce them myself before our engineers would believe them. Users have reported that they hear the audio on CNET TV just fine, but to get the video to play smoothly, users reported, "I have to move my mouse in circles."

The good news is we have narrowed this down to a bug that occurs in earlier versions of the Flash Player when running Windows Vista, with IE 7 in Protected Mode, with a site that has two Flash components that need to talk to each other. The not-as-good news is that we can't fix it on our side, but you can easily fix it on your side. Just follow these simple steps:

1. Uninstall the Flash player. You can download a small application from Adobe that will do this for you:

Flash Player Uninstaller

2. Install the latest version of the Flash Player.

Even if you have the latest version and you are having this problem, you'll need to uninstall it and reinstall it to solve the problem.

If this doesn't solve your problem, please let us know--either via the feedback link on CNET TV or in the comments here--and we'll try to help. Let us know:

1) What OS you are running?

2) Did you upgrade to that OS?

3) What browser and version do you use?

4) What version of Flash are you using? (Find your version of Flash here)

Didn't work
by Joesort April 24, 2007 4:39 AM PDT
I have vista ultimate on an Acer Travelmate 4670. I installed Vista from scratch. I have IE 7.0.6000.16386. I followed the instructions exactly. I even turned off the little slide show gadget in case that used flash. flash version is 9,0,45,0.

Please advise.

Problems with playback (not Vista though)
by hetzbh April 24, 2007 8:32 AM PDT
Hi,

I tested this issue both on FireFox 2 and IE 6 on XP SP2: when you switch to "Full Screen" mode, you get the Video, but Audio is silent, until you change the volume level.

When you change the volume level, the clip plays OK, but when the next clip comes, the problems returns - no audio until you change the audio volume again with the slider.

Thanks,
Hetz

Guys - I am totally in love with buzz out loud and so just love the idea of cnet tv. But - oh no - it does not work my my ubuntu box. I am running firefox with flash 9 - but it says:

'We've detected that you need to upgrade or install Flash 8 or later to view CNET TV and our library of thousands of tech videos. Installing Flash is fast, free, and easy! Simply follow the instructions from your browser, or click here to install/upgrade the free Flash player.'

Any ideas? Any extra info that help - let me know.

Keep up the good work!! AJ [www.nerds-central.com - twitter: AlexTurner]

But tom_'s method worked for me.

I'm running Vista Home Premium with IE7 Version 7.0.6000.16386. Adobe Flash player 9.0.45.0 installed after doing the uninstall/reinstall method cited in Justin's story.

using vista business installed fresh on new hard drive. cnet tv in ie will not play unless i move my mouse around...but plays fine when i view it with my msn explorer browser. however, in both browsers, when i full-screen it, the audio goes away, and i can not hear audio unless i click on the volume bar. i tried uninstalling flash using the utility from adobe, and re-installing flash, but that didn't fix it.

Some additional information...I added cnettv.com to my trusted sites in IE7, and that got it to play without having to move my mouse around, but now it will not go to full screen. However, it does go to full screen in MSN Explorer, but the audio goes away until I click on the volume bar.

Even more info to help fix this
by thebigdintx April 25, 2007 7:01 AM PDT
In addition...i had to "always allow pop-ups from this site" for cnettv.com to be able to click on the full screen button and have it go full screen..but the sound still did not play unless I clicked the volume bar.

I run Windows 98SE with Firefox2. It seemed like so many sites updated at the beginning of Dec. I have not been able to run any videos of any type. In desperation, I uninstalled Adobe Flash Player 9, in the hope of being able to reinstall it. I cannot even access the Adobe site now. My server times out.
I have a Windows Media Player and a GOM Player, neither of which will permit me to run video clips on ANY site, including my own blog.
Firefox, Adobe, Gmail and Blogger ALL updated to new versions on the same day.
I tried using the links suggested above & I cannot access anything Flash related without the server timing out. It sure sounds like an Adobe problem to me.
Any help will be most appreciated.
Lily
