WikiPad 1.1 Review

The idea of taking notes on a smartphone hardly seems new, but this app adds a twist. With WikiPad the user is able to create subsections through a simple process while taking notes. The app enables the user to create a Wikipedia-style database, where one note leads into several other notes. This is a fairly original idea and there are few if any applications that serve this function. While the idea is fantastic and the program does exactly what it claims, the execution needs some work.

WikiPad takes up very little memory in both usage and storage. It also downloads … Read more

Console Wars 2013: Sony PS4 and its competitors

Sony PlayStation 4 The current hot topic in console gaming, the just-announced PlayStation 4, is still largely an enigma. We don't know how much the PS4 will cost, when it's being released (beyond "holiday 2013"), or even what it looks like.

For now, it's still the next-gen hardware to beat, and what little we do know sounds impressive, with an entirely new system architecture based on an X86 AMD CPU/GPU that should make the PS4 easier to develop for and more flexible (and, frankly, more PC-like).

But 2013 will take the traditional three-way console … Read more

Revamped Wikipad on track for spring launch

On the cusp of hitting the market last fall, the Wikipad Android gaming tablet hit a snag. Citing "a last-minute opportunity to enhance the Wikipad bundle as well as a minor refinement needed to ensure our first customers are completely satisfied," Wikipad Inc. delayed the release a month before the tablet's scheduled launch date.

Just over four months later, the company is once again preparing to release the Wikipad. And since we saw it last, the tablet has undergone a fairly major design tweak, going from a 10-inch screen to a 7-inch version. The smaller screen also … Read more

Nook goes HD to face-off with Kindle

Wednesday's CNET Update puts a filter on it:

Barnes & Noble added two Nooks to the tablet family that have better screens and faster processors. Arriving in October, there's the 7-inch Nook HD (starting at $200 with 8 GB) and the 9-inch Nook HD+ (starting at $270 with 16 GB). They weigh in lighter than the competition and both have slots to add your own memory cards. But neither has a camera.

Gamers will be interested in the Wikipad, 10.1-inch tablet that has a controller dock with two analog sticks, a directional pad and four buttons. It … Read more

PlayStation Mobile still aims to take on iOS, Android games

Despite Sony's focus on mobile games via the PlayStation Vita, there's been a second, parallel path in the mobile game front taken via PlayStation Suite. That initiative, now called PlayStation Mobile, was detailed with additional hardware partners and promises of indie-friendly openness at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany.

PlayStation Mobile aims to take small-scale gaming to a wider variety of devices: Sony Xperia phones and tablets, select Android devices, and the PlayStation Vita. These games will download on all formats and be cross-compatible, in an attempt to build an ecosystem that can extend beyond traditional handheld game systems like … Read more

Wikipad tablet brings 3D and detachable game controls

LAS VEGAS--In the multitude of Android tablets cropping up here at CES this year, you've got to do something to stand out from the pack.

The Wikipad from Wikipad Inc. is trying to do that with a rather clever gimmick. It's a hybrid of sorts: an 8-inch tablet that also happens to have a full gamepad that snaps on.

Doing so adds a hearty collection of buttons to play just about any game, including two analog control sticks, a directional pad, start and select buttons, and four game pad buttons.

The company told me it plans on loading … Read more
