More cyberattacks hitting social networks

Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting social networks, prompting people to take more steps to protect their online privacy, according to a new survey from security company Webroot.

A survey of nearly 4,000 social-network users in the U.S., U.K., and Australia found that the number of people hit by Koobface and other social-networking malware reached 18 percent this year, compared with 13 percent last year and 8 percent in 2009.

Webroot gets into Android security with new app

Security firm Webroot has announced a new app for Android users.

Dubbed Webroot Mobile Security for Android, the application, which runs on both smartphones and tablets, scans apps for malware prior to installation. It also checks URLs to block phishing attacks. The app's identity-protection feature lets users remotely lock and wipe the device, while a map and "loud alert" help users find their lost hardware. Webroot's safety tips for holiday online shopping

With a new survey finding that half of the people polled plan to shop online for the holidays, security company Webroot offers some tips and tricks for staying safe in cyberspace.

Among the more than 2,660 consumers surveyed in the U.S., the U.K., and Australia by Webroot, 55 percent said they do plan to buy at least half of their holiday gifts online, a rise from 38 percent last year. But some of those people also plan to use search engines and public Wi-Fi to purchase those presents, activities that Webroot says could put buyers at risk.… Read more

A new version of Webroot Complete Internet Security does more than just protect your PC from viruses, spyware, rootkits, keyloggers, and other potential threats. It also lets you backup files and synchronize them to other PCs and manages your passwords so you don't have to remember them yourself.

Geolocation services--mobile applications that allow users to share their physical whereabouts with their networks--are gaining momentum. This week, Foursquare said it hit 100 million check-ins, with nearly 1 million "check-ins" per day. Finjan sues McAfee, Symantec over patents

Former security company Finjan has filed a lawsuit against five companies--McAfee, Symantec, Webroot Software, Websense, and Sophos--claiming they are in violation of its patents.

Finjan is asking for financial damages and an injunction to stop the five security companies from selling software allegedly tied to the patents.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, targets two patents.

The first, Patent No. 6,092,194, is for a "system and method for protecting a computer and a network from hostile downloadables" and covers both an interface and a security policy to determine … Read more

Webroot launches consumer security suite

Webroot, the maker of SpySweeper, on Tuesday announced a new security suite for Windows XP and Vista. The product, Webroot Internet Security Essentials (WISE), provides antivirus, antispyware, a personal firewall, along with a few utilities. It includes up to 2GB of online file storage for backup. It does not include Parental Controls.

The product includes Webroot's own Spysweeper and Windows Washer products. Antivirus support comes from a licensing agreement with Sophos. For the personal firewall, Webroot uses a custom version of PWI's PrivateFirewall product. And for online backup, Webroot has partnered with SOS Online Backup.
